Sorry, I am a bit late with this last chapter of our Swiss adventure. Blame it on a loss for words with regards to properly describing our visual experience while hiking along the Gornergrat, a mountain ridge offering multiple vantage points on the iconic peak of Matterhorn. But see for yourself.
Tut mir leid, ich bin ein wenig spät mit dem letzten Kapitel unseres Schweizer Abenteuers dran. Mir fehlen einfach die richtigen Worte dafür, all diese Eindrücke von unserer Wanderung am Gornergrat mit den verschiedenen traumhaften Aussichten auf die charakteristische Spitze des Matterhorns zu beschreiben. The the railway station in Täsch was a ten minute walk from the campground. We caught an early train to Zermatt, the car free village, which - after taking a closer look - we found completely overrated. Car free is not entirely correct because there were electric cars and trucks zipping around, chasing unsuspecting tourists. Also, the town was overcrowded with said tourists, and although it was advertised as "real traditional Alpine village", only a handful buildings were still original. Otherwise it was all hotels and tourist traps with overpriced nicknacks.
Der Bahnhof von Täsch war nur einen Katzensprung vom Campingplatz entfernt. Wir nahmen also am nächsten Morgen den Zug nach Zermatt, das auto-freie Städtchen, welches wir bei näherer Betrachtung für ziemlich überbewertet hielten. Auto-frei stimmt nicht so ganz, weil überall Elektro-Fahrzeuge herum düsten, die nichts ahnende Touristen jagten. Darüber hinaus schien das Dorf ausschließlich aus besagten Touristen zu bestehen und - obwohl als ursprünglich angepriesen - entdeckten wir nur eine Handvoll alter Gebäude, der Rest waren Hotels und Touristenfallen mit überteuerten Souvenirs.
Zermatt
Afterwards we took the cog railway up to Gornergrat on almost 3,100m (10.132ft) elevation. From the terminus we planned to hike across the ridge and back down into the valley while passing several viewpoints overlooking the scenery of the Swiss Alps, and its most prominent peak: the Matterhorn a.k.a. Toblerone Mountain.
Wir nahmen dann die Zahnradbahn hinauf zum Gornergrat auf fast 3.100m Höhe. Von der Endstation wollten aus wollten wir wieder hinab ins Tal steigen und dabei einige Aussichtspunkte mitnehmen, die besonders spektakuläre Aussichten auf die Schweizer Alpen und seine wohl berühmtesten Bergspitze versprachen: dem Matterhorn, auch vom Motiv auf der Toblerone Schoggi bekannt.
The building on top houses a very exclusive hotel, a shopping mall selling high-end watches and other Swiss-made accessories, two restaurants and an observatory. We had brought our own provisions so there was no real reason to consume anything but we craved for coffee, and that's what we got.
Das Gebäude am Berg beherbergt ein exklusives Hotel, ein kleines Einkaufszentrum, in dem man hochwertige Uhren und andere Schweizer Produkte kaufen konnte, zwei Restaurants und ein Observatorium. Da wir unsere eigenen Vorräte dabei hatten, mussten wir eigentlich nichts konsumieren, aber wir hatten Kaffeedurst.
Then we walked up to the viewing platform, and were rewarded with a fabulous panoramic view on twenty nine 4k+ (2.5 mls+) mountain peaks. Could it get any better than this? Yes, it could and it would while slowly making our way back down into the valley.
Dann begaben wir uns noch hinauf zur Aussichtsplattform und wurden mit einem fantastischen Blick auf neunundzwanzig Bergspitzen über 4.000m belohnt. Besser geht's nicht, oder? Doch, es ging und wurde immer besser, während wir uns langsam auf den Weg ins Tal machten.
Where do we go from here? - Wo geht's jetzt lang?
The trail system was excellent. It was impossible to get lost with all the sign posts, and best of all: there were separate routes for mountain bikers and hikers.
Das Wegeleitsystem war hervorragend. Mit all den Hinweisschildern würden wir uns nicht verlaufen können. Das beste daran: es gab separate Wege für Mountainbiker und Wanderer.
Of course we knew beforehand that we wouldn't be alone on this trek. The view on the peak of Matterhorn was a tourist magnet indeed. However, it wasn't as crowded as expected, and so we had a lot of opportunities without the odd ignorant person ruining the vista by walking through the motive.
Natürlich wussten wir vorher, dass wir auf dem Tripp nicht allein sein würden. Der Blick auf's Matterhorn zieht eben viele Touristen an. Dennoch war es gar nicht so übervölkert, wie wir befürchtet hatten, und so hatten wir viel Gelegenheit, tolle Bilder zu schießen, ohne dass uns irgend ein Idiot vor die Linse gelatscht ist.
Below is beautiful Riffelsee, likely one of the most depicted alpine lakes. Most of the time the water is perfectly still, and the motive of Matterhorn's reflection makes it the No.1 destination for photographers, amateurs and pros alike.
Und hier waren wir am wunderschönen Riffelsee, dem wohl am häufigsten abgelichteten See in den Alpen. Meistens ist das Wasser spiegelglatt und Spiegelung des Matterhorns im See macht diesen Ort zu einem Sehnsuchtsort für Fotografen, Amateure und Profis.
Moving further downhill the alpine landscape began to change, and softened. We had left barren scenery of ice and rocks behind, and wandered through green mountain pasture.
Weiter unten änderte sich dann die Landschaft und wurde sanfter. Wir hatten nun Eis und Felsen hinter uns gelassen und wanderten nun durch über eine sattgrüne Alm.
And there came our culinary reward. On conquering the patio at Riffelhaus 1853 in our muddy boots and dust covered clothes we demanded refreshments and food. It promptly came in form of spritzers and tarte flambée, and while relishing in sips on the first, the latter was wolfed down without further ado.
Und dann holten wir uns unsere Belohnung kulinarischer Art ab. In unseren verdreckten Wanderschuhen und verstaubten Klamotten eroberten wir die Terrasse am Riffelhaus 1853 und verlangten nach Erfrischung und Nahrhaftem. Das bekamen wir dann auch in Form von Schorlen und Flammkuchen, und während wir noch elegant am Getränk nippten, verschlangen wir die Franzosenpizza im Nullkommanichts.
By the way: Toblerone anyone? - Ach übrigens... will jemand ein Stück?
This was one of the best vacations ever! (But I say that every time I return from wherever...). Switzerland is a beautiful country, and bonus it's right around the corner, almost literally. We will be back.
Also, das war einer der besten Urlaube, die wir je gemacht haben (Aber sage ich das nicht jedesmal wenn wir von Irgendwo herkommen...?) Die Schweiz ist ein wunderschönes Land und auch noch direkt um die Ecke. Wir werden jedenfalls wiederkommen.
