The Sound of... Rain

It was April alright, which came with the typical kind of mixed weather that can be sun, rain, sleet, cold, and more rain, and all at the same time. But the scenery still pulled at us, we needed to get out, so we thought it was best to do something water-related, like walking along one of the many lakes or creeks or rivers in oder to find picturesque waterfalls, and discover mighty gorges. So we drove to Inzell, and found an easy 10k hike around the Falkenstein (mountain).

Es war nun mal April, also mussten wir auch mit dem für den Monat typischen Wetterwechsel rechnen: Sonne, Regen, Schneeregen, noch mehr Regen, und manchmal alles auf einmal. Aber die Landschaft zog uns nach unweigerlich nach draußen, und so dachten wir, es wäre am besten, irgendwas "mit Wasser" zu machen. Wir fuhren nach Inzell und wanderten den 10km Rundweg um den Falkenstein. Dabei ging es an Seen, Bächen und Flüssen vorbei. Wir entdeckten kleine und größere Wasserfälle und durchquerten eine mächtige Schlucht.

Our last stop for the day was Berchtesgaden (town), where we were served fresh Bavarian asparagus at the pub Bier-Adam, which is claimed to be the oldest pub in Bavaria (mentioned in documents dating way back to 1546).

Unser letzter Stopp war Berchtesgaden, wo wir frischen bayrischen Spargel beim Bier-Adam serviert bekamen, ein Lokal, dass für sich den Anspruch erhebt, die älteste Bier-Kneipe in Bayern zu sein (Dokumente sollen belegen, dass es erstmals in 1546 erwähnt wurde.)

Some trivia: The first and only time I got exposed to the musical The Sound of Music, the story of the von-Trapp family, was back in the 80's when visiting my great-aunt in in England, and I remember having it found very weird listening to supposedly native Austrians speaking and singing in (British) English... As a matter of fact the movie has never been very popular with the German crowd. We have indeed our own cringeworthy kind of Heimatfilme (homeland related romantic movies/musicals), and of course our very own German version of the von-Trapp story, which is likely even more awkward in theme and setting, but hey at least they spoke German with a southern accent.

But we are aware that this film will remain forever in the hearts of the international audience... So, before I forget: for all you fans of the Sound of Music out there... if you ever thought the movie was shot in Austria, think again... some of the most iconic scenes were actually filmed in the Berchtesgadener Land. Im deutschsprachigen Raum, ist die Film-Ikone The Sound of Music, die Geschichte der von-Trapp-Familie, weniger bekannt (ich habe ihn das erste und einzige Mal in den 80ern beim Besuch meiner Großtante in England gesehen). Wir haben ja unsere ganz eigenen (grauenvollen) Heimatfilme, auch einen über die Geschichte der von-Trapp Familie, dessen Szenen einen im innersten verkrampfen lassen. Aber, wer je geglaubt hat, dass der englische Film in Österreich gemacht wurde, vergesst es, die bekanntesten Szenen wurden tatsächlich im Berchtesgadener Land gedreht.

We were up bright and early to start our hike at the lake shore, after breakfast that is. First we walked up to a popular viewpoint called painter's corner, named for obvious reasons. At this time of the day the place was void of tourists. It was just us and the ripple noise of the lake.

Wir waren richtig früh wach und liefen am Seeufer entlang, nach dem Frühstück natürlich. Zuerst liefen wir zu dem berühmten Aussichtspunkt Malerwinkel, der aus offensichtlichen Gründen zu genannt wurde. Um diese Zeit war es erfreulich ruhig hier, nur wir und das Plätschern der Wellen.

The trail was easy and was well groomed although steep at times. The goal was to get to Königsbach Falls, via Raven's Wall but this plan was literally cut short. Used to the Canadian wilderness we walked past the warning signs. We had been hiking much rougher trails in Canada, wildlife included, however, at one point we couldn't get through, the path was blocked by fallen timber and huge rocks.

Der Wanderweg gestaltete sich als gut ausgebaut, auch wenn er teilweise etwas steil war. Eigentlich wollten wir über die Rabenwand zum Königsbach Wasserfall, aber hier wurde uns der Weg abgeschnitten. Wir waren ja kanadische Wildnis (tierische Begegnungen inklusive) gewöhnt, also ignorierten wir erst einmal das Warnschild, aber schließlich blockierten umgefallene Baumstämme und Felsbrocken das Weiterkommen.

So, all we could do, is admiring the falls from afar. Still impressive, though, watching the water cascading down approx. 200m into the lake.

Also begnügten wir uns damit, den Wasserfall von weitem zu bewundern. Schon beeindruckend, wie er über etwa 200m über sieben Kaskaden in den See fällt.

The viewpoint at Raven's wall (Rabenwand) gave us an even better vantage point towards St. Bartholomew.

We returned to our hotel for a lunch nap before we ventured out again, this time we explored the area by car. We needed to take advantage while the weather played along, and drove the Roßfeld scenic drive, the highest panoramic road in Germany, it's a toll road but on the plus side it maintained year round, and cleared off snow, and the views are just spectacular.

Danach ging es erst einmal für ein Mittagsschläfchen zum Hotel zurück, bevor wir uns dann per Auto noch einmal auf den Weg machten, solange das Wetter mitspielte. Wir befuhren die Roßfeld Panoramastraße, welche die höchste ihrer Art in Deutschland ist. Es ist zwar eine mautpflichtige Route, aber dafür bleibt sie auch ganzjährig befahrbar und die Aussichten sind einfach großartig.

Speaking of traveling to foreign territory: How about Bavaria?

Ok, it's not a different country per say but given our cultural background this part of Germany couldn't more alien to us. It was a spur of the moment decision, and we so we booked one of these trendy yet affordable hotels for the sportive clientele. After all we were planning on being active as well. Although the hotel room itself had a bit the charm of a french highway motel, location and amenities were great, it was spotless, and the breakfast buffet included lactose free and gluten free options.

Ok, wir sind mal weg gewesen, zwar nicht im Ausland, dafür aber in Bayern, was mit unserem kulturellen Hintergrund, das Gleiche bedeutet ;-)  Da wir dieses nicht geplant hatten, buchten wir kurzentschlossen eins dieser trendigen Fitness-Hotels. Schließlich wollten wir ja tatsächlich auch aktiv sein. Auch wenn das Hotelzimmer eher den Charme eines französischen Autobahnmotels hatte, war es sauber und der Standort sowie die Zusatzleistungen waren perfekt. Zudem bot das Frühstücksbuffet Laktose und Gluten freie Optionen. 

The village Schönau is located at Königssee (The King's Lake, not that Bavaria had a king, though.), in the southernmost municipality of Germany, Berchtesgaden Alps, and bordering on Austria.

Der Ort Schönau liegt am Königssee (auch wenn Bayern seinerzeit keine König hatte), in der südlichsten Gemeinde Deutschlands, den Berchtesgadener Alpen an der Grenze Österreichs.

As Easter is a typical travel weekend, bumper-to-bumper traffic jams were to expected but we could beat them by rising early, and leaving before dawn, and detoured the congested areas. The weather forecast wasn't very promising. It was supposed to be rainy, snowy at times, and definitely cold. 

Es ist ja bekannt, dass der Osterverkehr mehr steht als fährt, also machten wir uns schon vor Sonnenaufgang auf die Socken und umfuhren die Staus großräumig. Leider versprach die Wettervorhersage nichts Gutes: es sollte kalt und schnee-regnerisch werden.

We arrived around lunch time, had an early check-in, and then made a bee-line for the dock at the lake to catch the ferry to St. Bartholomä. Königssee is said to be one of the cleanest lakes in Germany, there is no motor boating, diving or other private recreational activities allowed on the lake, and the ferry service runs on electric power since its beginnings in 1909. And the weather was surprisingly fair.

Wir kamen gegen Mittag an, checkten direkt ein und machten uns dann direkt auf zur Fähre nach St. Bartholomä. Der Königssee ist als einer der saubersten Seen Deutschlands bekannt, konventionelle Motorboote, Sporttauchen sowie andere Wassersport-Aktivitäten sind nicht gestattet. Die Boote werden bereits seit Beginn der Schifffahrt in 1909 auf dem See elektrisch betrieben. Ach, und das Wetter war erstaunlich gut.

The lake is surrounded by high peaks and steep mountain flanks which gives it a fjord-like character. At one point the ferryman would stop the motor and his colleague would play a flugelhorn, to demonstrate the powerful echo reflected from the walls. Tourists like this kind of stuff. 

Der See ist von steilen Bergflanken umgeben, was ihre einen Fjord ähnlichen Charakter verleiht. Am berühmten Echofelsen hält das Boot an, un der Fährmann zückt ein Flügelhorn, um das berühmte Echo zu demonstrieren. Besonders bei den Touristen aus Übersee kommt das gut an.

St. Bartholomä is a pilgrimage church located on the opposite side of the lake, and like castle Neuschwanstein, one of the most famous attractions in Bavaria. Lots of tourists naturally flock the area, but as soon as one walks a few miles along the shore, it was getting thankfully quiet again. Nevertheless, this spot is one of the must-sees when visiting Bavaria.

Die Pilgerstätte St. Bartholomä liegt am gegenüberliegenden Ufer und ist, wie Schloss Neuschwanstein, eins der berühmtesten Sehenswürdigkeiten Bayerns, damit ist klar, dass diese naturgemäß von Touristen überlaufen ist. Aber nach wenigen Kilometern am Ufer entlang wurde es wieder ruhiger.

After having exhausted ourselves with a 10k hike, we were ready to return to Schönau, tired and hungry, and ready for local culinary specialties. The asparagus harvest had already begun, and so we knew what to order for dinner. It was delicious.

Nach einer 10km Runde waren wir müde, hungrig und bereit, wieder nach Schönau zurückzukehren, um den lokalen kulinarischen Genüssen zu frönen. Die Spargelsaison hat bereits begonnen, damit war klar, was wir uns zum Abendessen gönnen würden. Es war köstlich.
