A Mini-Blogger Meet-Up in Switzerland - Ein Mini-Blogger Treffen in der Schweiz

Sketch from medieval times

I knew Anita for more than a decade. She writes about her everyday-life in Canada. We visited each others blogs, communicated through commenting and emailing, and finally twelve years later, we got to meet each other in person, in the town of Wil, about 200 kms away from us.

Why do Swiss immigrate to Canada? I asked her, and the reason sounded so very familiar to us: because we could...

Once managers of a campground in Ontario they sold their place three years ago in order to retire. Not because they had reached the age, but because Swiss people tend to get out of the treadmill as soon as possible. Cue the other surprise attendant of our mini-blogger meeting, an early pensioned Swiss hiker-blogger Werner with his dog and as such the main character of the blog: Timi. Six legs combined they make true ambassadors of their homeland.

A bear pointing us into the right direction

Together we hiked up to the town's landmark, a wooden watch tower. The weather wasn't great but at least it didn't rain. We chatted about Canada (of course), cultural differences, travels, dogs (Roland would love to own one) and hiking. Time flew by.

Then we strolled back along the pond next to the old city core, watching waterfowl do their thing.

The old city core of Wil was lovely, alas due to the All Saints holiday most businesses were closed.

At café Hirschy we satisfied our craving for coffee, and I got to taste the traditional Swiss dessert Vermicelles, a pastry made from chestnuts. Yummy.

Lecker!

At some point and way too soon we had to part ways. We had made reservations at a campground two hours away from here, and needed to be on our way in order to get there and build up our camp before dusk settled. Thank you Anita, Werner and Timi for a great albeit short time to be had. It was fun meeting you.

CamperVan-ing

Our weapon of choice: Karmann Dexter 600 GO

Back in the 90's camping was a non-expensive getaway opportunity, the destination was France or Spain, and my then means of transportation a 500cc thumper. The weather was usually great, and the campgrounds were really cheap and simple, but often enough came with a caveat (from cockroaches to insanitary or broken down facilities, I am not going into details here). So, naturally as soon as funds became a non-issue I gladly upgraded to comfort and 3+ star hotels as soon as I could afford it.

Then there was Canada: Due to the long distances, and the lack of accommodation opportunities in between, the new millennium had me seen traveling in huge (a.k.a. Trump: yoooge!) camper vans with all the bells and whistles with regards to on-board facilities. We camped completely self-sufficient in national parks, cooked on camp fires, and showered on board, as well as stood on excellently serviced campgrounds, and always surrounded by marvellous scenery. These travels laid the foundation for our immigration to Canada.

Back to now: Our choice fell on a rather small camper van with a length of six meters (6,50m bikes included) in order to be able to drive fast(er) on the autobahn, and be manoeuvrable in tight spots. We did not need all the comfort of a big recreational vehicle. The weather forecast was perfect, and we had a handful luxury campgrounds lined up along the way. They provided us with complete facilities including kitchen, washing machines, and clean and mostly new or freshly renovated private bathrooms. Prices varied between 17€ and 35€ depending on the location, and rebates through the camping card, valid in most EU countries, and on many campgrounds.

One major advantage of traveling outside high season was the free choice of a favourite lot on a campground. Usually this spot in Krik at the North Sea in Denmark, would be occupied by four RV's, but we had it all to ourselves.

Privacy isn't something that comes natural with most campgrounds close to cities. This one in Roskilde is basically a huge lawn with hookups for electricity and/or fresh water.

Grey water is being released by moving a lever. This can be done at a car wash or at a dedicated station on site,

while black water is being collected in a small removable box filled with chemicals, and dumped at a special facility at the campground. It is in fact quite easy to clean and maintain.

We liked this vehicle for:
- its compact size - easy to manoeuvre
- no speed limit (unlike vehicles >3.5 tons)
- a bed large enough for the man
- the under bed storage room
- the gas mileage
- the every day suitability

We didn't like:
- the compact size: not enough headspace and bathroom too small for people >1.90m
- a loud motor (FIAT Ducato) and permanent wind noises though the roof hatches at higher speeds
- no opposite seats while eating

Heatwave... elsewhere.

From today's visit on a friendly blog I learned about weather in Alberta, Canada. On the left you see Black Forest weather, on the right the status and forecast for Calgary. We are not amused!

The best Countries in the world!

A new study (source: Washington Post) ranks Germany as the best country in the world, and Canada as a very close runner up. In our opinion this clearly should be the other way round but still... calling the two best countries in the world our home, well, if that isn't something!

So, where could Germany and Canada still improve? Of course, Germany right now is facing the giant task of managing the refugee crisis, and while Canada was picking out the raisins, Germany has been dealing with the broad mass of migrants. However, it is impressive to see that many Germans welcoming, helping and supporting the newcomers, which makes us proud. At the same time the right wing radicalisation of the so called "Besorgte Bürger" (worried citizens) must not be underestimated.

Canada on the other hand urgently needs to move away from the extreme dependency of it's natural resources, and find a way to a better educated population and a stronger industrial sector. Huge tasks!

# 27 and # 28

The postman brought us a neat surprise today: Our membership confirmation for the Vespa Club of Canada. How cool is that! Thank you, David.

Wouldn't the patch go well with my club cut?  (It would certainly get attention...)
