At the Border Triangle of Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany - Im Dreiländereck von B, L und D

Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg

Two awesome weeks flew by, my mother had paid us a visit and spent most of her time spoiling us to the max. Mom's cooking is still the best.

To show our deep appreciation for her culinary efforts the least we could do was to provide for a safe journey here and back. Of course we took Siggi, the camper van along. Four hours and four hundred kilometres later, we arrived at Mom's home, and were not allowed to leave unless she had whipped up a late lunch for us (thanks to the treasure chest that is her freezer.).

Eventually we are on our slow way back taking a detour via Belgium, Luxembourg and France.

Crossing the border to Belgium

Near the town of Eupen we spot a quiet campground with a brasserie (cafe) at river Weser, and decide to spend the night.

With the usual setup quickly out of the way we enjoy spending the rest of the sunny day relaxing, reading and on my part... walking along the river.

Temperatures are a few degrees cooler in the forest, especially with the river nearby. Thankfully it was quite windy, so no bug attacks for a change.

Despite the fact that we had already eaten a big meal a few hours back we feel a bit peckish, and head over to the Brasserie. When in Belgium, do as the Belgians to: Eat fries with mayonnaise. Washing it down with your choice of long drink is optional.

The wind died down in the late evening, and we got a good night's sleep. The next morning we break camp, and set out to find a bakery. It's Sunday but some boulangeries are open.

The sky is overcast, as we arrive at the Gileppe reservoir. The dam is 140 years old, its early design was the first European concrete construction of its kind, and the first reservoir in Belgium. It has been improved and restored since. Water levels are low due to the long lasting draught.

At Baraque Michel we purchase croissant and baguette, which will help saving Roland from starvation. We just have to find a decent breakfast spot. The old house (built 1811, and rebuilt since) is located on the second highest peak in Belgium (674m), the highest being at Botrange (694m) in the High Fens, a high plateau between the Eifel and the Ardennes.

The upland vegetation looks rough, a strong wind is going and it's quite cold compared to the temperatures we experience since weeks the gauge show a mere 17°C.

While driving further down south we lose elevation. Inspired by markers we follow the path of the river Our: Mind, where there's a river there is a picnic area. Our intuition didn't betray us.

It's called teamwork: while Roland makes coffee, I lay the table, and voila, all set.

These are the moments we cherish the most when traveling with our new companion.

After packing up and driving a mere two clicks we arrive at the border triangle of Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany close to the village of Ouren where the rivers Our and Ribbach converge. There we find a memorial built 1977 symbolising the European community.

Four megaliths carry commemorative plates bearing the names of great Europeans:
Konrad ADENAUER, Germany on a sandstone from Lüneburger Heide
Paul Henri SPAAK, Belgium on a blue slate from Vielsalm
Joseph BECH, Luxembourg on a limestone from Mullerthal
Christian PINEAU, France on a slate rock from the Vosges

We certainly appreciate the advantages coming with a united Europe, especially when traveling: no frontiers, no border controls, and a common currency. And just a few meters down the road the satnav informs us that we have just crossed the border to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

In a small village we stop for a quick coffee and bathroom break before moving on to the last leg of our journey.

Without any further indication or markings the satnav informs about yet another border crossing. Bonjour, France.

Bonjour, France.

The sky's becoming bright and clear, temperatures rise up to 33°C (92F), the toll road is void of traffic, and the air condition is working its ass off.

No waiting time at the French highway toll both.

With crossing the river Rhine we arrive back in Germany. From there it's a mere half an hour drive home.

Roadtrip!

A formerly moated Castle and the Dutch Mountains

Sonja: We had spent a long weekend in in the Rhineland, for Roland to visit a concert in Cologne, and for both of us to spend some time with our friends and family.

Not far from were my mom lives lies castle Lüntenbeck. The castle can be dated back to the early 13th century, and is a former residence of the knights of Berg.
In past times the castle had been moated but the area got drained later, and only a small pond behind the building remained. The manor is in private hands today, and has been carefully restored by the owners.
Main building
Parts on the premises are rented out. Naturally the picturesque venue attracts artists and wellness providers. Also, a restaurant can be found in the main building, offering an eclectic choice of (mostly) vegetarian dishes.
Mill
During Christmas time a handcraft Christmas Market is held in the yard. The market is known for its authenticity and atmosphere, especially since the artisans will be traditionally dressed up in costumes from the middle ages.

The temperatures were mild and we saw definite signs of spring.

Saturday we ventured out towards Aachen to visit friends in the area. We were a bit early and decided to take a detour to the city of Vaals in Holland. The Vaalser Mountain (323m or 1,059 ft) belongs to the foothills of the Ardennes, and marks not only the highest (!) point in the Netherlands, but also the border triangle of Germany, Netherlands and Belgium.
We climbed the watch tower to admire the panorama.
A view towards Germany.
 Now overlooking Belgium.
And a panoramic shot of the famous Dutch "mountain range".
So, we have learned today, that the Netherlands are not completely flat.

Sunday noon we left after a brunch celebration of a family member's birthday and drove 400km south again. It was warm and sunny… and would have been a good day for a ride, too...

A Refuge between Borders

Het Zien is the name of a nature reserve situated at the mouth of Westschelde between Cadzand Bad, Netherlands (right side) and Knokke-Heist, Belgium (on the left).
In past times a tidal channel served as access for Bruges port but over centuries the waterway silted, and it came to a definite end as a shipping route.
The salt marsh area, the dunes and sand plains then became a refuge for birds and salt-loving plant life, and was made a natural reserve in order to protect wildlife.
The flow of the low tide water left ephemeral ripples in the sand.
Again we were blessed with mild temperatures and a blasting blue sky. What a beautiful winter day! One could walk for hours if it weren't for the fresh gale which was tiring us out after a while.
The poles serve as cutwater and protect the shore. We guessed that those might be buried three meters (10 feet) deep in the sand to be able to endure the tidal waves.
Aside from the practicality the barriers also make for a picturesque scenery.
Roland and mom goofing around.
It was early afternoon but we were already casting long shadows, and after a couple of hours walk in the sand we were ready again for a warming cup of tea.
