Wismar, town of Nosferatu

Wismar belonged to the former Hanse trade union and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. And it had also been the filming location for the horror classic movie Nosferatu.

Lots of town houses date back to the heyday of the Hanseatic League. Wismar's old town is one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Germany. We stroll along the streets and alleys and can't get enough of the different architectural styles from bygone eras.

The former landmark, St. Mary's Church, was built in the 13th century and expanded over the next two centuries and elevated by three floors. Shortly before the end of the WWII, the cathedral was destroyed in an air raid and finally had to be demolished in 1960. Only the tower, which is over 80 meters high, remains standing strong today.

Wismar is definitely worth a visit!

Bicycle town Schwerin

We were wondering why there was almost no accommodation left in and around Schwerin. Reason was the "Everyone's bike race around the Schwerin lakes". At Hangar 19 marina we got the very last camp space, not perfect, but at least with top sanitary facilities and our own access to the lake. Since we are “stuck” here with the van, we explored Schwerin castle, the park, the old town and the surrounding area on bikes and on foot.

The city is preparing to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of the residential buildings appear to have been recently restored or are in the process of being renovated.

We walk around the beautiful castle, located on an island in the lake, and marvel at the building with its almost 1,000-year history from all sides.

The old town is lively. Unfortunately we are denied access to the cathedral due to an event. Schwerin is a real bicycle town with separate bike paths and often two-wheelers have priority over motorized vehicles. Thats how it is suppost to be!

Tranquility at the lake

There are of lakes in the Mecklenburg lake district to chose from, and even more campgrounds. We found a quiet area at Jabel lake and got a prime spot with a lake view (for a premium price, though) and did nothing for a change.

At the little Sea

Nice hotel

Our journey takes us to the Mecklenburg Lake District. For a change, we treat ourselves to a "real" accommodation and stay at the Hotel am Tiefwarensee in Waren.

Waren is located on the “little sea” Müritz, the largest inland lake entirely located in Germany. (Lake Constance is larger but also belongs partly to Austria and Switzerland. The old town center with its picturesque houses exudes a cozy Northern German charm that contrasts with the lively hustle and bustle on the lake promenade. With so many restaurants, it's difficult to choose. However, we already knew what we were in the mood for: fish & chips. The sunset over the water makes for the perfectest of days.
