Day Four: Weiskirchen to Reinsfeld - 27 km
Today will be very much a water themed hike as the trail will constantly follow a variety of rivers, creeks and streams. The bubbling, rippling, rushing noises will be a feast for the ears. The many roots crossing the trail are treacherous and slippery and to be watched carfully. I crave for a spritzer alas, the halfway inn is closed. Lucky me, there is a water fountain nearby where I can quench my thirst. Not much elevation gain or loss, the path has an almost even layout. I reach a pick-up point at the trail head, make a phone call and can score an accommodation for the night.

Etappe 4: Weiskirchen bis Reinsfeld - 27 km
Die heutige Tour steht im Zeichen des Wassers, Bäche sind stetige Begleiter und ein Ohrenschmaus, wie sie mal leise murmelnd, mal munter plätschernd den Wanderer auf verschlungenen Pfaden begleiten, welche dank ausgewaschenem Wurzelwerk mit hohem Stolper-Potential versehen sind. Leider gibt’s keine Erfrischung für den durstigen Pilger, denn der Grimburger Hof unterhalb der gleichnamigen Burg ist geschlossen. Auf dem Rest der Etappe durch das Wadrilltal sind kaum noch Höhenmeter zu bewältigen. Beim Abholpunkt “Frau Holle” angekommen, organisiere ich mir eine Übernachtungsmöglichkeit.

Day Three: Losheim to Weiskirchen - 20 km
While the metal freaks and goths are still in a coma, sleeping off their magic potions, the change in weather lets me wake up early. The sun is shining brightly but it's still nippy. The markers show a detour due to logging activities but I can't hear saws or machinery and march on and up to the highest village of Saarland, called Scheiden. The next section is rocky and slippery and involves a little climbing but a rope helps with the ascent. I am leaving this geological obstacle behind and cross a natural reserve where rare European bisons reside. I manage to interview the boss of the herd and ask him to pose for a picture (there was an electrical fence). Soon I reach Weiskirchen where a youth hostel awaits the frugal wanderer and a supermarket provides for re-supply.

Etappe 3: Losheim bis Weiskirchen - 20 km
Während die Metaller und Goths noch ihren Zaubertrank ausschlafen, bin ich schon wieder unterwegs. Die Sonne scheint, aber es ist noch frisch. Die Wegweiser verweisen auf einen Umweg, ich höre keine Sägen oder Maschinen und laufe munter den originalen Pfad weiter. Es geht hinauf nach Scheiden, dem höchstgelegensten Dorf des Saarlandes. Hier gilt es, ein paar Felsen zu bewältigen, einmal hilft ein Seil beim Anstieg. Dann war’s das auch schon wieder mit sichtbaren geologischen Besonderheiten. Höhepunkt des Tages ist das Wisent-Gehege, denn der Chef-Wisent war gerade zuhause und bereit, für einen Schnappschuss zu posieren. In Weiskirchen befinden sich ein Campingplatz und alternativ die Jugendherberge für den preisbewussten Wanderer sowie ein Supermarkt für den Re-Supply.

Day Two: Orscholz to Losheim at the Lake - 31 km
Early mornings are at their best when everything is closed and you get the highlight of the trail all to yourself. Saarschleife, the popular river loop partly shrouded in clouds. The trail leads to Mettlach, a city famous for its traditional ceramics factory. After restocking on food and beverages the path leads up the hill again and over grassy high plains, and dives once again into the forest following a creek and old waterline. Historic boundary markers tell from times where Saarland didn't belong to Germany. I'm in a flow today and make good progress. While getting closer to today's milestone it's getting quite noisy. There's a metal and goth festival going on: Hexentanz - the Witch Dance. The music isn't too bad though, and I decide to stick around. And with the sunset comes the promise for better weather in the next couple of days.

Etappe 2: Orscholz bis Losheim am See - 31 km
Das Cloef-Atrium mit Touri-Info ist so früh am Morgen noch geschlossen. Kein Mensch weit und breit, als ich das Highlight dieses Wanderwegs erreiche: die Wolken verhangene Saarschleife. Auf dem Weg hinunter nach Mettlach eröffnen sich schöne Blicke ins Flusstal. Man durchquert den für seine tradionelle Keramik berühmten Ort und hat Gelegenheit für eine Pause oder einen Versorgungseinkauf bevor man sich wieder in die Höhe schraubt. Eine Weile geht es dann über Felder und Wiesen bis man im Saarhölzbachtal dem gleichnamigen Wasserlauf folgt. Historische Grenzsteine sind Zeugen aus einer Zeit, als das Saarland nicht zu Deutschland gehörte. Die Wegführung verläuft abwechselnd über Wiesen, dann wieder an Bächen und Weihern vorbei. Es läuft gut heute und ich komme gut voran. Bei Losheim empfangen mich schließlich dröhnende Bässe, das Hexentanz-Festival. Hier geht was ab. Der Campingplatz ist rappelvoll. Die Mucke gefällt mir und ich bleibe. Der Himmel reist auf und präsentiert mir einen Sonnenuntergang und das Versprechen auf Wetterbesserung.

I had five days to myself and spent it section hiking the Saar-Hunsrück-Trail in the province / state of Saarland. The Trail itself stretches over 410 km (255 miles) leading from the city Perl at the border of Luxembourg/France east towards Boppard at the river Rhine. Special feature of this trail is its abundance of single trails leading through a conservation area.

Ich hatte fünf Tage frei zur Verfügung und verbrachte diese wandernd auf dem Saar-Hunsrück-Steig im Saarland. Der Wanderweg führt über 410 km von Perl an der Grenze zu Luxemburg und Frankreich bis Boppard am Rhein. Das Besondere an diesem Weg sollte die naturnahe Wegführung möglichst unter Vermeidung von Schotter- und Asphalt sein.

Day One - Perl to Orscholz - 25 km
I stand a bit forlorn at the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxemburg. Not that there was any visible border. Down below the city of Perl. The weather sucks, it's cold and windy, and rainy. What have I gotten myself into. I don my rain gear, wave my dear hubby goodbye and head into the woods. I am joined by a handful of other hikers but they soon walk off into a different direction and I am on my own again, and this is how it will be for most of the rest of the journey. The scouts and trail managers did an excellent job marking the trail, neither do I need a map nor an app. The forest flouresces in fifty shades of green, and the trail is pulling me in. It's going to be a relaxed walk with few ups and downs leading through the woods, over high plains and alongside burbling creeks. After a hail shower the sky opens up and the clouds give way to sun and blue sky. Typical April weather. My feet begin to hurt and so I find myself seeking an accommodation in Orscholz.

Etappe 1: Perl bis Orscholz - 25 km
Ich stehe ein bisschen verloren am Wanderparkplatz, wo mich mein bester Ehemann von allen abgesetzt hat. Am Dreiländereck führt der Pfad hinauf in den Wald, ich ziehe meine Regensachen an. Es stürmt und regnet, eine Aussicht auf Perl hat es nicht, dafür schillert der Mischwald in sattem Grün. Eine Handvoll Wanderer biegt auf den Moselsteig ab, und so bin ich ganz allein auf dem S-H-Steig unterwegs, das wird sich in den kommenden fünf Tagen auch kaum ändern. Die Wegmarkierungen sind ausgezeichnet, ich brauche weder Karte noch App. Kompliment an die Wege-Scouts. Als ich an der rekonstruierten Villa Borg vorbei komme, geht ein Graupelschauer nieder. Kurz danach: blauer Himmel. Echtes April-Wetter eben. Am Meditationscenter komme ich an einem kleinen Wasserfall vorbei, der einzige auf diesem Weg. Steigungen und Höhenunterschiede gibt es nicht viele und so laufe ich entspannt bis Orscholz an der Saarschleife weiter. Am ersten Tag habe ich immer Anlaufprobleme, meine Füße tun weh, ich brauche einen Unterschlupf für die Nacht.
