Die Region leidet unter stetigem Bevölkerungsschwund, seit dem die Schwerindustrie brach liegt. Der Protagonist wirbt auf seiner Webseite damit, dass es in Kanada ein Gesundheitswesen gibt, dass die Menschen sich um einander kümmern, keiner eine Waffe trägt und dass es keinen schert, welcher Religion, Gesinnung, Rasse oder Geschlecht man angehört. Und schön ist es da auch noch...

Was als Scherz gedacht war, ist ernst genommen worden, denn innerhalb kürzester Zeit gab es über 2.000 Anfragen und die Touristen-Webseite verzeichnete über 50.000 Aufrufe aus den USA.

Mountain Grind

And yet, it started out harmless: Hey let's ride through the orchards. We had a great pace despite the headwinds. Water levels of the little creek were high due to recent torrential rainfalls.

And we circled half around the hill. Now our little village lies behind that very hill, and we thought...

How about taking a shortcut? Let's go climb the hill and blaze a trail down on the other side.

Well, said and done... except there wasn't much cycling involved in the first few hundred meters. Our pedal powered bikes had to be transformed into "push" bikes.

But the forestry setting was lovely, and we had it all to ourselves, except a couple of hikers who offered to trade their walking sticks for our bikes. Because they found it too strenuous to hike up any further. We convinced them that going uphill was even worse on a bicycle.

We were looking forward to said downhill race, but the track was so muddy and slippery from the rainfalls that we decided to take it easy and walk the bikes down for the better part of the way. We are no spring chickens, and old bones break fast. Oh well, there was certainly an equal amount of walking and biking involved while playing outside for three hours today, despite the fact that the trip was supposed to be a bicycle tour. But overall we found it was well worth it, plus we got enough workout to mentally survive the daily grind in the office.

Schinderei am Berg

Dabei fing alles so harmlos an, hey lass' uns einfach ein bisschen durch die Obstgärten radeln. Trotz Gegenwind kamen wir gut voran. Wir umrundeten den Berg (auf dem zweiten Bild im Hintergrund zu sehen). Dahinter lag nun unser Dorf. An der Kinzig war der Wasserstand beunruhigend hoch von den Regenfällen der vergangenen Tage.

Wir befanden uns schon auf dem Rückweg, als wir auf die Schnapsidee kamen, dass wir für den Rückweg ja die Abkürzung über den Hügel nehmen und dann bergab in die Zielgerade rasen könnten. Gesagt, getan. Nur, das auf den ersten paar hundert Metern nicht viel mit Fahrradfahren war. Boah, war das steil. Alles, was wir tun konnten, war schieben. Aber der Wald und die Stille - wir waren fast ganz allein - entschädigte für die Kraxelei. Unterwegs begegneten wir einem schnaufenden Wanderer-Pärchen mit Gehstöcken, die sie nur zu gern gegen unsere Bikes eingetauscht hätten, weil sie meinten, damit schneller unterwegs zu sein. Nee, nicht wirklich... 

Oben angekommen sollte nun die rasante Abfahrt losgehen. Nur wurde daraus leider nichts, denn der viele Regen hatte den Boden total aufgeweicht, so dass wir kaum die Spur halten konnten. An den ganz steilen Stücken sind wir sogar (wieder einmal) abgestiegen, weil uns das Manöver zu gefährlich erschien. Schließlich sind wir ja keine jungen Hüpfer mehr und alte Knochen brechen leichter. 

Wir kamen schließlich fix und fertig, aber zufrieden mit unserer Leistung, zu Hause an. Trotz aller Latscherei (es sollte ja eigentlich eine Fahrradtour werden) verbrachten wir fast drei Stunden an der frischen Luft und bekamen genügend Auslauf, um die kommende Woche mental im Büro zu überstehen.

"All of us have favourite items we like to take with us on long distance motorcycle rides, or tours. Just for fun, I am putting together a list of the top essential items riders take with them.  What are the five things you CANNOT leave behind?"

1. For your bike.  It could be a particular tool, cable ties, oil, or a puncture repair kit.  What won't you travel without?

An extra bottle of fuel (full) - Gary knows the reason, why. On both of his tours I learned the maximum distance I can go on a Sportster peanut tank... the hard way ;-)

2. Something you wear when riding.  A favourite pair of gloves perhaps, a heated jacket, a certain pair of boots, or kevlar jeans maybe?

Besides ATGATT I go never without a Buff: It warms your neck in the winter, protects you from fumes or bad smells, a wet Buff keeps you fresh in the summer, and protects you from insect impact (well, mostly).

3.  Technical stuff.  Maybe you won't go without a camera, music, a GPS or a laptop.  What item MUST you take?  Don't list a phone, as we all carry those!

4. Essential item to carry with you.  That could be water, sunscreen, paper maps or something else?

My roadside assistance card (ADAC), because I do not have room for tools, and wouldn't know how to make use of them anyway.

5. A luxury item - Cigars, a favourite hat, shoes, an expensive watch?Lip balm, if that can be considered a luxury.

Jeder von uns hat Lieblingssachen, die er (neben den üblichen, offensichtlichen und notwendigen Dingen...) mit auf Reisen nimmt. Gary will nun aus den hoffentlich zahlreichen Antworten eine allumfassende Liste zusammen stellen und braucht dafür Feedback. 

Bei mir sind es die folgenden unverzichtbaren Dinge:

1. Für das Motorrad: 

Eine volle Flasche Benzin, Gary weiß, warum. Denn auf beiden Touren, die ich mit ihm machte, hat er versäumt, rechtzeitig eine Tankstelle zu finden. Der Flascheninhalt hat mich dann immer noch zur nächsten Zapfsäule gebracht. Jedenfalls weiß ich seitdem, wie weit ich mit einer Sporty-Tankfüllung komme...

2. Was ich immer trage: 

Also neben der Motorradschutzkleidung trage ich immer einen Buff. Im Winter wärmt es den Hals, schützt nebenbei vor Rauch und Gestank; ein feuchter Buff erfrischt im Sommer und verhindert Insektenangriffe (meistens jedenfalls).

4. Absolut unverzichtbar: 

Meine ADAC Karte, da ich nie Werkzeug bei mir habe und damit sowieso nichts anfangen kann, will und mag.

5. Ein Luxusprodukt: 

Labello (anders: Lippenpflegestift), falls man das überhaupt als Luxus bezeichnen kann.

Eine andere Antwort auf die Fragen 1, 3, 4 und 5 hätte auch sein können: mein iPhone... ;-)

Long overdue

... catching up with Sonja's lifelong friends at the American Roadstop, which made us all nostalgic and homesick.

... watching the sun rise at Mom's place. Being pampered to the max, and getting stuffed with home made goodies.

... making new friends: Meet Ty, the cuddle monkey kitty.

... taking a long walk for some fresh air despite high water, rain and wind.

... going on a culinary journey in Freiburg. A shopping spree went awry when a place called Markthalle (market hall) was discovered. Brazil meets Persia. Delicious.

 ... hiking the best next hill to regain some of our fitness. Still rainy but who cares.

Two weekends filled with friends, family, fun, food and fitness. Life is good!

Pretty in Pink - Not!

With reference to a Facebook promo for a Z800 Lady Edition at BikerWorld, German Bloggeress Mo complained about the manufacture's lack of phantasy in design. Why pink? And so much of it? Ladies want their choice of colours, a good fit, plus protection, not a Barbie outfit. 

But many companies in the two wheeled universe still seem to assume that products specifically designed for the female clientele must have something pink in it. Oh, right, and by all means let's throw in some flowery pattern for good measure. But honestly, I don't know one female rider dressed in pink gear, not one. So, naturally one wonders, who's buying all this sh$t?

I went digging through my stuff in order to find out if I own any pink coloured gear. Bikes, helmets, jackets, pants, gloves, boots: everything but pink. Ok, colour choices are rather limited to black, sand or hi-viz yellow. 

What would Yoda say? Be patient. Hmmm. Hope, there is, Ladies. Yes, hmmm.

Schön rosa - nicht für mich!

Mit Bezug auf die Promo-Fotos für eine Lady Edition einer Z800 hat sich Mo kürzlich auf ihrem Blog zu Recht darüber mokiert, dass die Hersteller von Damen-Motorradkleidung, aber auch von Motorrädern immer noch denken, es müsste zwingend was Pinkes drauf sein, am besten noch kombiniert mit Blümchenmuster. Aber wer kauft so einen Schei$? Ich kenne nicht eine Motorradfahrerin, die in rosa Lederkluft oder sonstigem Barbie Outfit herum läuft. Beim Durchwühlen meiner eigenen Moppedkluft habe ich nicht einen rosa Fetzen entdeckt. Das zeigt, wiederum, dass es mit viel Mühe und Geduld gelingen kann, auch andersfarbige Damen-Motorradkleidung zu finden. 

Freiburg Nightlife

Saturday night we were going to a rock concert in Freiburg. This city is an hour drive away from home, and we don't go there very often for some reason we don't quite understand ourselves. Because this city has everything we miss in the heart of the Black Forest: Bars, good food and entertainment.

First things first: Food! When we entered the Mexican-Californian fusion restaurant Sausalito's, it was already packed with young folks. Freiburg is a university town. Weirdly enough by German standards the waiter welcomed us with a familiar "Du" instead of the formal "Sie" and on a first name basis, as if we were regular visitors. It almost sounded as if we had entered the American sector  ;-) Nice touch.

We were treated to a happy hour special (half priced long drinks), and how could we say no to things called Indian Mojito and Summer Cooler. Bonus, they had vegan and gluten free options on their menu. While Roland went with a traditional burger, Sonja opted for the vegan version sans bun.

With culinary senses satisfied and bellies full we walked over to the event location, the Jazzhaus Freiburg. The age group was a bit different there... more mature folks (like ourselves). The performer was Laith Al Deen, a German-Iraqi singer and song writer.

The venue was underground, in a vaulted cellar, and the proximity to the singer was almost intimate. We had a good time, and it looked like everybody else had, too.

It wasn't allowed to take photos with a camera, but the cell phone pictures didn't turn out too bad either.
