Hike-minded - Wandern im Sinn

Again I spent weekends hiking the many trails around our new home while often discovering new things, learning about history, architecture, flora and fauna on the fly (or respectively: on the walk).

I met up with other hikers in the Hunsrück area in order to accompany a long distance hiker for a few days. Her project is a Germany thru-hike by means of a combination of a variety of different hiking trails adding up to almost 3,400km or 2,100 mi. Three months ago she started at the northernmost point of Germany (Sylt pensinsula) and - if everything goes to plan - will arrive at Germany's southernmost point at the Austrian border (Haldenwang corner) early October. The unofficial trail called the NST (North to South Trail) had been initiated by a YouTuber going by the name of Soulboy.

Also I explored the Palatinate wine region on the other side of river Rhine some more. The so called wine trail showed me yet again the softer side of Germany, with vineyards galore and lots of panoramic views.

The green Mile (Part 5) - Der grüne Tunnel (Teil 5)

Day Five: Reinsfeld to Nonnweiler Reservoir - 25 km
The last day of my journey shows me the high plains of the region near Gusenburg and Hermskeil. The trail is easy to follow and again I am making good progress. Some markers explain that there had been an ancient burial site but all I see are piles of dirt. I have to believe what the signs explain. One last hill to conquer, then it's all downhill until I reach the bottom of the Nonnweiler reservoir. I gather my last energy resources and run (ok stumble) up the dam where my hubby welcomes me with ice cold lemonade and snacks. What a wonderful finale.

Oben erwartet mich bereits mein Trailmanager (a.k.a. weltbester Ehemann) mit eiskalter Limo und leckerem Imbiss. Was für ein Finale.

Conclusion:
Long stretches of single trails are rare in Germany, the trail scouts did a great job connecting the dots to create this long distance trail. Signs and markers showed the way, there was no reason to get lost, no map or navigation system needed. For this I give kudos to the trail managers. Restocking on food and beverages at times can become an issue. For this a bit sensitive planning is needed or else you get to stay hungry and thirsty.
Accommodation has been a bit of an issue on the first section but later there were all options given from cheap camping to high end hotel whatever your budget would allow. There aren't many geological or cultural features offered, instead you'll get fifty shades of green, woods and grassland, ponds and rivers, and wildlife sightings such as deer, hare, mice and boar. I haven't had a lot of contact with the natives. They seem a bit shy and taciturn. Also, not many other travelers seemed to hike this trail, I was on my own most of the time.

Fazit:

The green Mile (Part 4) - Der grüne Tunnel (Teil 4)

Day Four: Weiskirchen to Reinsfeld - 27 km
Today will be very much a water themed hike as the trail will constantly follow a variety of rivers, creeks and streams. The bubbling, rippling, rushing noises will be a feast for the ears. The many roots crossing the trail are treacherous and slippery and to be watched carfully. I crave for a spritzer alas, the halfway inn is closed. Lucky me, there is a water fountain nearby where I can quench my thirst. Not much elevation gain or loss, the path has an almost even layout. I reach a pick-up point at the trail head, make a phone call and can score an accommodation for the night.

The green Mile (Part 3) - Der grüne Tunnel (Teil 3)

Day Three: Losheim to Weiskirchen - 20 km
While the metal freaks and goths are still in a coma, sleeping off their magic potions, the change in weather lets me wake up early. The sun is shining brightly but it's still nippy. The markers show a detour due to logging activities but I can't hear saws or machinery and march on and up to the highest village of Saarland, called Scheiden. The next section is rocky and slippery and involves a little climbing but a rope helps with the ascent. I am leaving this geological obstacle behind and cross a natural reserve where rare European bisons reside. I manage to interview the boss of the herd and ask him to pose for a picture (there was an electrical fence). Soon I reach Weiskirchen where a youth hostel awaits the frugal wanderer and a supermarket provides for re-supply.

The green Mile (Part 2) - Der grüne Tunnel (Teil 2)

Day Two: Orscholz to Losheim at the Lake - 31 km
Early mornings are at their best when everything is closed and you get the highlight of the trail all to yourself. Saarschleife, the popular river loop partly shrouded in clouds. The trail leads to Mettlach, a city famous for its traditional ceramics factory. After restocking on food and beverages the path leads up the hill again and over grassy high plains, and dives once again into the forest following a creek and old waterline. Historic boundary markers tell from times where Saarland didn't belong to Germany. I'm in a flow today and make good progress. While getting closer to today's milestone it's getting quite noisy. There's a metal and goth festival going on: Hexentanz - the Witch Dance. The music isn't too bad though, and I decide to stick around. And with the sunset comes the promise for better weather in the next couple of days.

Hier geht was ab.
