Another double stage on Burgensteig - Eine weitere Doppeletappe auf dem Burgensteig.

I slept in so I am running late. So I have to get going faster than usual (call me the running slug). Soon I have conquered castle Starkenburg, I snap a few pictures and move on. The path is called way of the planets and explains our planets while approaching the (closed) observatory. Through vineyeards and on forest trails it goes up and down. There are some steep sections requiring my full attention and a full body workout with the help of my trekking poles.

At the Hemsberg Bismarck tower (did I mention that every second tower seems to be dedicated to a guy named Bismarck, mastermind of German re-unification, and inventer of our welfare state) I enjoy a snack break and a cuppa tea while sitting in the sun. My feet are especially greatful.

I skip a visit of Bensheim old city and move on again through vineyards. Located on the hill Kirchberg is a waterhole but definitely too many people for my taste. I put my mask on and start speed hiking in order to overtake the crowds. Soon I am on my own again.

Friendship pavillon belongs to the Fürstenlager, a former summer residence for sovereigns. There are mansions, stables, a huge park, a spa and fountains, alas all shut down due to Covid-19.

It's getting cool in the shadowy valley and I have almost reached the end of today's hike, however the sun is still out and so I decide to take a detour and climb another hill in order to visit castle Auerbach, yet another 200 m in elevation. But it is well worth it. The views are breathtaking and the evening sun paints the castle ruin in spectacular colours. Built in the 13th century it was destroyed in the Dutch wars four hundred years later by the French, and got never rebuilt. There are also plenty of visitors here but everybody keeps their distance. Of course I need to replenish my electrolytes with half a litre of Radler before heading down again. Now it's all downhil from here to Auerbach.

Also wieder 200 hm hoch.

Two Castles, two towers and lots of miles - Zwei Burgen, zwei Türme und viel Strecke

Another episode on the hiking trail Burgensteig awaits. The first stretch is a repeat, as I have been at these two castles Waldeck and Wachenburg before but as I prefer connecting footsteps I include these two highlights into today's (19/10/2020) hike.

The path goes around town then up and down again. In the so called six-mills-valley I cross a busy road and continue over more or - in this case - less maintained trails. The signage is perfect, not once do I have to at the map/app. And again I am heading upwards towards Hirschkopf. On the hill peak the bench at the first tower looks inviting, and decide to stop for a tea break and snacks.

On a short steep downhil section follows a lovely set of single trails through the quiet forrest. During my hike I encounter no more than three other hikers, a mountain biker and one guy on an e-bike (obviously all men). Along the trail I discover typical marks of wild boars every so often but I don't get to see any today.

And the trail continues up and down over the hills Bocksberg, Kreuzberg and others... The weather remains grey and cloudy but without precipitation until I reach the vineyards. Suddenly the sun comes out and presents my destination for the day in its best light, with a view on the old city core of Heppenheim and castle Starkenburg (which I will visit on my next hike).

After a good five-hour hike a reward is in order and I treat myself to a pumpkin cream soup and a Radler. The next train leaves in an hour, so I have enough time on my hand. My feet hurt, the last stretch had involved rough gravel which isn't my prefered hiking surface but over all it was a great hike summing up 30+ km and 950m in elevation.
