It's Time for Helmet Hair!

Helmfrisur... darum trage ich auch meist eine Mütze.

Yay! I am back from my two wheeled hiatus. Alonzo, my 2013 Vespa GTS 300 SS has been patiently waiting for over six months now, and I wasn't sure if the scooter would start up at all. But my worries dissipated into thin air on the first push of the starter button. It was as if there had not ever been a break of half a year between two trips. I removed the cobwebs from the rear view mirrors, and freed the seat from dust. Then I rode over to the gas station for the highest octane on tap and checked the tire pressure before I hit the road.

Hurra! Ich bin wieder zurück auf zwei (motorisierten) Rädern. Alonzo, meine 2013 Vespa GTS 300 SS hat sechs Monate geduldig auf mich gewartet. Ich war nicht mal sicher, ob der Roller überhaupt anspringen würde, aber meine Bedenken wurden bei der Betätigung des Starters in alle Winde zerstreut. Es war, als wenn es nie eine Unterbrechung von über einem halben Jahr gegeben hätte. Ich entfernte die Spinnweben von den Rückspiegeln und befreite den Sitz vom Staub. Danach fuhr ich zur Tankstelle 'rüber, gab der Vespa das Beste, was der Zapfhahn zu bieten hatte, prüfte noch den Reifendruck und dann ging's los.

I followed the call of the typical first post winter ride, and made a beeline for the Black Forest Scenic Road (B500 Schwarzwaldhochstraße). While spring had already hit the valley with full force, the clear mountain air on 1,000m (3.280ft) altitude still had a chill in it, and the trees were just starting to be in bud. My first destination was Mummelsee, a small lake conveniently located by the scenic road. You can't miss it. It's a tourist trap alright but also offers a lovely shore trail, a good place to stretch your legs, have a coffee or cool beverage for refreshment, and use the facilities if need be.

Wie jedes Jahr nach der Winterpause ging mein erster Ritt auf die Schwarzwaldhochstraße. Während im Tal der Frühling schon in vollem Gange ist, lag noch eine gewisse Kühle in der klaren Bergluft auf 1.000m Höhe und die Bäume fingen auch gerade erst an zu knospen. Mein erster Anlaufpunkt war der Mummelsee, welcher, wie die meisten wissen werden, direkt an der B500 liegt. Der Verkehr hielt sich um diese Jahres- und Tageszeit noch in Grenzen, aber es ist natürlich eine Touristenfalle vom Feinsten. Aber nebenbei führt ein schöner Wanderweg um den See, eine ideale Gelegenheit, sich die Füße zu vertreten, eine Erfrischung zu sich zu nehmen und wenn nötig, auch eine Pipi-Pause zu machen.

There was another point of interest waiting along the scenic road, so I went on to continue my little road trip without further ado. Next stop: The Lothar Memorial Trail. Lothar was the name of a hurricane that swept over the northern Black Forest with wind speeds of more than 200 kph (124mph) back on Boxing Day 1999. The storm felled trees in an area of roughly 40,000 hectares (almost 100,000 acres), and left behind 30 million cubic meters of timber. An educational hiking path leads through the former forest explaining what happened, and how nature has been reclaiming the now protected area since.

Am Rande der Panoramastraße gab es noch einen weiteren interessanten Wanderpfad, also setzte ich ohne weiteres Verweilen meine kleine Reise fort. Nächster Halt: Der Lothar Pfad. Lothar war der Name eines Sturmtiefs, welches am zweiten Weihnachtstag 1999 mit über 200 km/h über den Nordschwarzwald fegte, dabei Bäume im Bereich von etwa 40.000 Hektar platt machte und ca. 30 Millionen Kubikmeter Abbruchholz hinterließ. Heute führt ein Lehrpfad durch das geschützte Gebiet, erklärt, was seinerzeit passiert war, und wie sich seither die Natur die Landschaft zurück erobert.

By then I felt a little exhausted, my body told me that it was time to return home for coffee and cake. I am thankful to be back on two wheels, even if it had only been a mere 120km round trip for now, with two (walking) breaks in between. In Yoda speak: Strong in this one the desire for helmet hair is... yesss!

So langsam merkte ich, dass mich die Fahrt ermüdete, mein Körper funkte, dass es Zeit wurde, nach Hause zurück zu kehren, wo Kaffee und Kuchen auf mich warteten. Ich bin froh, dass ich endlich wieder auf dem (motorisierten) Zweirad unterwegs sein kann, auch wenn es erst einmal nur ein kurzer Tripp von 120km war, und ich zwischendurch zwei (Lauf-)Pausen brauchte. Yoda würde sagen: Stark das Verlangen nach Helmfrisur in mir ist...
