When Continents collide - Zusammenstoß der Kontinente

The tale of the Bruchhauser Steine. Just a mere pile of rocks? There is indeed more to it. We found witnesses of a geological event that had once taken place in the late Palaeozoic Era. These rocks are of porphyry, a very old material, formed over 370 million years ago from deposits of a primeval sea. 40 millions years later volcanism penetrated the area and deposited lava between the shale layers. These rock columns were later on pushed upright and lifted up into a high mountain range during the continental collision. Through erosion over million of years the mountains vanished but the hard lava resisted the everlasting weathering process up to this day. Amazing, or is it?

Die Geschichte der Bruchhauser Steine. Für den einen ist es nur ein Haufen Felsen, für mich sind es Zeitzeugen einer Kollision zweier Urkontinente vor Jahrmillionen und der daraus resultierenden Gebirgsbildung, die seinerzeit im Paläozoikum statt fand. Bei dem Gestein handelt es sich um Porphyr, einem Gestein, das vor über 370 Millionen Jahren aus den Ablagerungen eines Urmeeres entstand. Etwa 40 Millionen Jahre später wurden diese Schieferschichten durch Vulkanismus aufgerissen, und in den so entstandenen Spalten sammelte sich Lava. Durch den Zusammenstoß der Ur-Kontinente wurden diese Lavasäulen dann später während Entstehung einer Gebirgskette aufgerichtet und angehoben. Und während das Gebirge erosionsbedingt längst wieder abgetragen ist, trotzt der harte Stein bis heute immer noch der ewig währenden Verwitterung. Ist doch spannend, oder?

To the rocks on 756m elevation

The rock formation is nature conservation land, and home to rare bird species such as the eagle owl or the peregrine falcon. Alas, we haven't seen any that day. 

Die Steinformation liegt in einem Naturreservat und beheimatet (heute wieder) den Uhu und den Wanderfalken. Leider haben wir aber an dem Tag keine Vögel gesehen.

The walk uphill was strenuous, a strong gale made for snow drifts, and the temperatures - windchill factor included - was likely minus two digits Celsius. On the plus side, we were pretty much alone up there.

Der Marsch auf den Istenberg war anstrengend, eine steife Brise sorgte für Schneeverwehungen und die Temperatur war gefühlt im zweistelligen Minusbereich. Das Gute daran war, dass wir ziemlich allein da oben waren.

Since the early days of mankind people must have lived between the rock in some kind of fortified settlement, artefacts found in the area state that there must have been a hill fort, which was a common structure in Europe back in the bronze or iron age.

Archäologische Funde weisen darauf hin, dass hier bereits in der frühen Menschheitsgeschichte Leute innerhalb eines angelegten Schutzwall gelebt haben müssen. Diese Wallburgen gab es in der Bronze- oder Eisenzeit in ganz Europa.

Find me if you can - at Feldstein

Feldstein is by the way the only rock formation that can be climbed to the peak. The other pinnacles are off limits in order to preserve the rare animal and plant life up here. A ladder and a rope is leading to the top but its rough and dangerously slippery, especially under these conditions. So we opted to play it safe (I did try, though...). Anyway, there was no view to be had, we were up in the clouds, and it snowed. 

Feldstein ist übrigens der einzige der vier Felsen, der bis zur Spitze erklommen werden kann. Die anderen Bergspitzen dürfen zum Schutz der dort ansässigen seltenen Tier- und Pflanzenarten nicht bestiegen werden. Eine Natursteintreppe mit Kettenseil war allerdings bei diesem Wetter trotz Geländer schwer zu besteigen, und da durch Wolken und Schneetreiben die Aussicht eh versperrt blieb, haben wir es auch gelassen (nicht, dass ich es nicht versucht hätte...).
