Fulda, located on the river of the same name was founded 744 as a small benedictine monastery and since has grown to a city with approximately 70,000 inhabitants.
A walk through the old city core explained the epithet of the Baroque city:

To me, along with many other US army veterans who were stationed in Europe when there were two Germanies, the name Fulda will be forever associated with the word gap, as in the Fulda gap.... Through which the Soviet Hordes were going to invade back in the day..... lttle did we know they probably wouldn't have gotten very far.
It's still a scary thought, Dom, that such a lovely area had once been a part of cold war games. And would you believe that most Germans were left in the dark about this? It is not something you would have learned about at school, even today the term Fulda Gap is pretty much unheard of.
At least the US army stationed at the border had a good time and came home without ever shooting a bullet.
