A mere three hour drive took us to Bergen-Schoorl, a small village adjacent to the highest dunes in the Netherlands. The highest peak is about 50+ meters which, given that the country itself is fairly flat is quite an impressive elevation.
Bergen is fairly quiet this time of the year, the Dutch celebrate Christmas early on the eventing of the 5th of December, hence not much decoration was left in the streets.
We also visited the city of
Alkmaar, famous for its cheese market and its cute little alleys. The fog gave it a little "
Silent Hill" vibes, though.
The North Sea was cold, the sky was grey, the winds were strong, the beaches were... sandy, very much so.
The vegetation in the dunes provided a bit protection from the wind gusts, but not from getting our feet wet.

Happy New Year to you, Ricard. It was cold indeed but the other option would have been backtracking two miles, and we didn't want that because it had been the last stretch of the trail. Cheers, SonjaM
