CMT - Camping, Mobile Leisure and Tourism Fair in Stuttgart

In Germany we have laws and regulations for everything, this includes the most important topic for the working population: vacation time. The related paragraph states that an employee is entitled to an  annual minimum of 24 days (based on a 6-day work week). Most unions have been fighting for better conditions over the past four decades, this is why the average employee is contractually entitle to 30 days per year (based on a 5-day work week). All this leisure time has to be filled wisely, and to support the matter, the tourism industry has its own exhibition dedicated to holiday destinations, camping and other fun. So this is, where we had to be.

The pictures show quite obvious what we were looking for. We were half an hour into our visit at the CMT and already been hauled in by some young ladies in order to make a reservation on a Volkswagen Campervan rental with all camping equipment and a major discount for booking while visiting the fair included. Needless to say we are very fond of the all new VW California.

Several companies besides VW offer inbuilt or module solutions for the interior. We liked the idea of the modules, as they can be easily removed to give the van another purpose for transportation of stuff or people.

Roland sure will have certain issues given his height, but he really loves the campervan, so with thought we just give it a try, and spend our next vacation in one of those. We'll let you know.

Ok, we really liked this one a lot. The new Mercedes X-Class pick-up truck with a camper cabin. Does it make sense in Europe, though? Not so much.

An then we found this one: An adventure mobile with AWD. This VW Campervan means business, the offload kind. Awesome!

We also found some other fun stuff: I very much liked this motorised razor scooter, while Roland was in favour of the new Simplon Kagu E-Bike.

It got late, and I suffered a bit from a beginning head cold, so we decided not to drive home but to stay in a hotel in Bad Urach on the Swabian Alps, half an hour away from Stuttgart. It was a very pleasant stay, and the cuisine was exceptionally good. And the two of us had a lovely relaxing evening.

Mountain marshland - Im Hochmoor Hornisgrinde

Due to a recent weather change with rainfall and stormy weather and temperatures in the high teens (Celsius), all the beautiful snow was gone. With the melting snow came the flooding and in the wake of the water came the occasional landslide. Our valley wasn't affected but some villages in the Black Forest were hit hard, so there were people who had to spend their weekend pumping out water and mud out of their houses. Thankfully nobody got hurt.

Nevertheless, there was still snow to be found on higher grounds above 1,000 meters. So we followed the B500 a.k.a. Schwarzwaldhochstraße (The famous Black Forest Scenic Road) and parked the car at a trailhead near Mummelsee (the lake with the tourist trap), which we found still frozen.

Mummelsee - View towards Hornisgrinde Tower

We tried to follow the hiking trail but soft and partially hip deep snow drifts made it impossible to walk through. Fortunately the regional forest manager had dirt roads cleared and cross-country ski tracks groomed, so there was enough room for both hikers and skiers.

So it happened that the hike was a few miles shorter than planned, but Roland got his reward anyway. The watch tower was not only open to visitors but a hole in the wall was manned and served local cake specialties and sausages with homemade crusty bread.

The view from the tower was marvellous that day, and offered scenic views on the marshland on top and the Rhine valley below. The bog is supposed to be over 6,000 years old and was formed through everlasting rainfalls. In fact we were lucky with the vistas, because usually the mountain ridge is shrouded in clouds, and it rains almost every day. The amount of rainfall is almost double of what Vancouver in Canada gets, so the mountain is saturated with water.

While in the area we also wanted to say hello to our favourite waterfall All Saints. The area still showed signs of recent avalanches and fallen trees. But there were other footsteps on the trail so we found it safe enough to walk along the creek which had become a roaring river with all the melting. It was a bit of an adventure but not quite enough to scare us, and make us turn around. However we would currently not recommend this trail for people with disabilities, as they might not be able to climb over all the obstacles or cross the snow banks.

We had our first two-wheeler sighting. The roads were cleared, temperatures felt warm enough, but one still had to watch out for slippery gravel and icy patches in the shadows. But I bet they had a marvellous outing.

Mon(t)real in Germany

Once upon a time there was a village called Monreal (king's mountain) nestled in the hills of the volcanic region Eifel. People have settled here since the old ages, and in the Middle Ages it became a small but wealthy town based on successful sheep farming and therefore cloth production. But as time went by they got kicked out of business by fierce competition from abroad. Otherwise what is today known as Tweed, might have been called Monreal, but one will never know. It took until mid of the 20th century for the village's revival when it was discovered by the tourism board for some new trend called romantic getaway. And it worked out well. Buildings were renovated, hiking trails were groomed, and accommodation and regional cuisine is being provided to travellers. These days location scouts tend to select Montreal as a filming location every so often.

On top of that (literally on top of the hills) there are two castle ruins, one is called Phillipsburg, the other Löwenburg, and a steep trail leads up to them. Guess what we did. We conquered the hills, and enjoyed the beautiful vista into the valley. Below lies the picturesque village. It was very windy up high on the tower so we didn't stick around for long.

After this we continued our travels towards Bonn, the former capital Germany, and stopped by the bridge that helped the allies winning WWII. Alas, we found the peace museum closed for season.

At the end of the day we met up with our friends Guido and Andrea, who were back from California and in the area visiting family. We had a marvellous time together which was way too short, as we had to get back to work.

Eifel roadtrip

The snow came and went away: Within a day a very unusual temperature change happened, and we got 17°C (62F).
