A tale of two Germans descending into one of the craters of the Snaefellsjökull on a quest to find the center of the Earth? We will never get to know, why Jules Verne's protagonists were from German descent (and not French), or why he even chose the glacier on Snaefellsnes peninsula to begin with. However, although fairly avant-garde and futuristic in his time, many of the writer's visions were not too far off. Take traveling in space or submarines for example. So, let's go to Snaefells then!
It was a relaxed three hour drive with occasional stops for foto ops and taking in the clean sea breeze. In Borganes, which seemed to be the last outpost before wilderness begins in earnest, we stocked up on provisions at Bonus, a grocery chain recognisable by a yellow flag with a pink pig in it. There were even offerings of gluten free and lactose free products, yay!

And purely by coincidence Stapi also happens to be the last stop of Jules Verne's travellers on their journey to the center of the Earth.

Sonja, Roland, an incredible place to visit and one of the many that I'd still love to actually visit someday. Thanks for taking me along.
ReplyDeleteLove that B/W photo!
Thanks for tagging along, Doug. I'll let Roland know that you like his artsy pic.
DeleteI sure hope that the subterrain has wifi or cell service so that you can keep us apprised of y'all's adventures. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous looking place--wow, wow, wow. And I especially like that black and white photo: Cool composition, Sonja.
Oh that, indeed. Haven't thought that through. Internet connection is quite spotty in this area.
DeleteShame on me: Cool composition, Roland, on that black and white pic. (Go ahead, Sonja, take credit for it. We won't tell. ;-) )
DeleteI don't know how they cope without trees. I would miss trees.
ReplyDeleteMichael, I very much agree. But early settlers seemed to have been successful in destroying Iceland's forests for building and heating.
DeleteHow beautiful. I think I'd miss trees too, but the landscape is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteBrandy, we missed trees to a point where we started shouting and pointing whenever shrubs and trees came in sight.
DeleteEvery time I see pictures of Iceland the places strike me as so clean. That, and treeless. If you see a tree please show us a picture.
