Go North, you must, young Padawan

The past two weeks have been too hot for my taste. I prefer temperatures in the 20°C range over this blistering heat. Outside activity of any kind becomes unbearable, and worse yet it makes people dress down inappropriately, subsequently exposing body parts that better stay hidden. So, after another hot short night I found myself researching for travel destinations with more moderate weather conditions.

And true to my new adopted motto of 'if life gives you lemons...' I am going to make lemonade in form of a road trip to Denmark. The idea is to rent a camper van in order to take it slow and easy, and also take the bicycle along for some intended two wheeling.

I have fond memories of Denmark, or Jutland to be more precise, where I spent most of my formative years on vacation. My siblings and I used to roam around freely from dawn till dusk, unsupervised. We would swim in the North Sea, go kayaking, jump from high dunes. We'd go beach combing, or explore WWII bunker ruins since beaten up by the forces of nature. We would broil hot dogs over camp fires, devour lots of pastry goodies, and eat salty liquorice until our tummies ached. And we read books, lots of books. Those were the days...

And in order to rebut the famous Hamlet quote, it's actually everything but rotten in the state of Denmark, because once again the southern Scandinavian nation took the top spot on the UN World Happiness Report (Iceland made it third!), while Germany scored an unsatisfactory 16th, although our homeland offers its inhabitants everything that Scandinavia ranks high in, except we Germans obviously do lack the proper mindset, and must! not! ever! be just... content.

The Danes, despite paying more taxes than any other nationality, seem to have it all figured out. But how do they do it? Is it a properly functioning work-life balance (This word doesn't even exist in the German language.)? The cradle to grave social safety net? Easy access to all LEGO? The proximity to water? Their cuisine (e.g. Smørrebrød) and their delicious pastry? Their abundance of cycle routes? And what is the deeper meaning of the Law of Jante? Soon I will make it my mission to find an answer to the Danish secret to happiness.

  1. I think that it's the easy access to Legos. You don't stress about that little, critical piece that launched itself off of the table.

    Sounds like a great trip...

    1. Dom, for us kids it was exiting, however coming to think of it, quite dangerous, too with all sharp metal pieces sticking out, loose bricks and concrete blocks...

  5. Oooh that sounds like a fun trip. I don't like the extreme heat either. After last week's 42˚C at least it is cooling down now. I guess we are lucky we can head to the ocean, but unfortunately most of the valley does the same.

Looking forward to your trip report. Have fun.

    1. Looking forward to temps around 20°C, Brandy. At least that's what's in the forecast. Can't wait to get to the ocean again, even if it is the North Sea only...

  7. For Germany's ranking, could you partially blame Friedrich Nietzsche, one of your greatest thinkers? He seemed to distrust and even reject "happiness", even embrace contempt:

"What is the greatest experience you can have? It is the hour of the great contempt. The hour in which your happiness, too, arouses your disgust, and even your reason and your virtue.

"The hour when you say, 'What matters my happiness? It is poverty and filth and wretched contentment...'"

But who am I to speak--the States didn't rank much higher. (BTW: Nietzsche left one hell of an impression on my nineteen year old mind.)

    1. Not sure if it is Nietzsche's fault, Ry, or if he was just being hardcore German. Happiness is the essence of life, and one can be happy despite being poor or sick even. (I needed a while though, to understand this meaning of life, but I am there yet.)

  8. Well Canadians come in 6th on the happy index 😉. A friend of mine has Danish routes and has family over there still. I have always wanted to go to the Nordic countries and explore. We have been having extreme heat here as well and I much prefer the low 20's to the mid 30's. I was teaching last week for 4 days in the blistering afternoon sun and I think we were up around 33-34C, I have never drank that much water and even gatorade, the heat just sucks out all the energy from your body. I look forward to seeing your pics!

    1. Of course, you (we) do, Dar. It was so easy to be happy in this country, not sure what's so different. It just was. In Germany it seems somehow more difficult although we are a rich country and life is easy.
