The Black Forest has turned white in the past couple of days. Southern Germany has been struck by a cold spell quite unusual for this area. It almost felt like Alberta winter. The hill was still cast in shadows when I started my ascent in the early morning. It had just "warmed up" to -13°C (8.6°F), and the trail was covered with a thick layer of powdery snow. I treaded carefully with regards to the frozen ground, hence the climb took longer than usual, but dressed in three layers I felt well protected against the cold, and finished my usual 10k (6 mi) loop. I could have walked a longer distance, but I didn't pack snacks or a warm beverage, which I might do next time just in case...
It got quite cold indeed.

I believe that landscapes look better with a nice coating of snow, and your pictures are proof! Sehr schön!
ReplyDeleteDanke, Dom! I have to agree, white coat does become the Black Forest.
DeleteLooks pretty nice, especially if there wasn't windy. You need a little more snow for some x-country skiing.
ReplyDeleteRichard, it was dead calm, so no wind chill factor. We are expecting more snow but it's going to warm up which will make for slush.
ReplyDeleteDa hast Du recht, Marcus.
DeleteI'm sorry I have missed some of your difficulties from 2016. I hope that you are on the mend and appreciate your ability to get out and hike/trail run. I agree, 2016 was a shitty year and hopefully 2017 will prove to be much better. Best wishes! I'll be rooting for you.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lori. So far things aren't looking too bad for 2017, and healing is progressing well. I am hoping for a bit more motorcycling this year but if not, I am as happy to keep on walking...
DeleteWow, good for you in getting out for a walk in those chilly temperatures. Worth it for those views.
ReplyDeleteBrandy, it is almost as if I need the walks... I have less and less difficulties convincing myself to go out and just do it.
DeleteGreat photos. I will be visiting Germany this summer while on my first ever trip out of the USA.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Thomas. Nothing will beat first ever trips. Where will you be headed?
DeleteGreat photos! Sounds like you're getting really fit!
ReplyDeleteso, so beautiful!
