Skiing down this meagre hill was of little interest for us. We chose to hike the short but steep trail up to Hornisgrinde, peaking at 1,163m the highest mountain in the Northern Black Forest area. The ascent however, became more challenging than expected. We found large parts of the track to be frozen and covered with big chunks of ice due to the many little creeks crossing and meandering downhill.

The area has one of the highest amounts of precipitation in Germany (almost 2,000mm - compared to Vancouver, BC 1,200mm, and they call that city rainy!), hence the mountain top is saturated with water. We were glad for the support of the walking sticks but next time we'll also bring along spikes for our boots.
Nevertheless we made it up to the top unscathed. Of course we also mounted the over one century old watch tower overlooking the highland bogs (also due to the high precipitation). The views were awesome. We could see all the way to the Vosges on the other side of the Rhine valley which was completely covered in thick fog.

For the descent we chose a different route which was thankfully almost free of ice but likewise steep. Following down the pattern of rocks and roots which seemed arranged like a staircase we arrived at our starting point in no time (1.5h - 6.1km - 48 floors).
- 6,1 km - 48 Stockwerke).
Now it's back to work, which I find oddly appealing, because it shall mean that the doctors declared me healed (high time for my body to recognise this fact already!).
DeleteNice hiking pictures! Ice covered rocks, not great for hiking though, you both must have some great traction with your hiking boots!
ReplyDeleteIt's wasn't the best idea, Dom, and we learned a lesson to bring along our crampons next time around. Some of the vegetation along the way gave us enough traction plus we got the walking sticks.
DeleteSure a pretty view from up that high. Good thing you had your walking sticks with you. Those tree roots would be horrible with ice on them.
ReplyDeleteBrandy, icy roots and rocks have certainly slowed us down quite a bit but we were careful and got early warnings from other hikers in the area.
DeleteWonderful as always. So beautiful where you live. Icy trails can be treacherous, especially downhill. Glad that you found a better return route.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kari, it is quite nice here, and if it only had an ocean nearby the location would have been perfect for us ;-)
ReplyDeleteHammer, was ihr da so marschiert.
DeleteHappy New Year Sonja and Roland! Lovely pictures!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dar, Happy New Year for you and your loved ones as well.
