Im Höhenrausch: Mountains and Glaciers and Lakes, oh my!

"Im Höhenrausch": The feeling of euphoria kicking in when altitude sickness hits.

Sorry, I am a bit late with this last chapter of our Swiss adventure. Blame it on a loss for words with regards to properly describing our visual experience while hiking along the Gornergrat, a mountain ridge offering multiple vantage points on the iconic peak of Matterhorn. But see for yourself.

Schaut's Euch an.

The the railway station in Täsch was a ten minute walk from the campground. We caught an early train to Zermatt, the car free village, which - after taking a closer look - we found completely overrated. Car free is not entirely correct because there were electric cars and trucks zipping around, chasing unsuspecting tourists. Also, the town was overcrowded with said tourists, and although it was advertised as "real traditional Alpine village", only a handful buildings were still original. Otherwise it was all hotels and tourist traps with overpriced nicknacks.

Zermatt

Afterwards we took the cog railway up to Gornergrat on almost 3,100m (10.132ft) elevation. From the terminus we planned to hike across the ridge and back down into the valley while passing several viewpoints overlooking the scenery of the Swiss Alps, and its most prominent peak: the Matterhorn a.k.a. Toblerone Mountain.

The building on top houses a very exclusive hotel, a shopping mall selling high-end watches and other Swiss-made accessories, two restaurants and an observatory. We had brought our own provisions so there was no real reason to consume anything but we craved for coffee, and that's what we got.

Then we walked up to the viewing platform, and were rewarded with a fabulous panoramic view on twenty nine 4k+ (2.5 mls+) mountain peaks. Could it get any better than this? Yes, it could and it would while slowly making our way back down into the valley.

Where do we go from here? - Wo geht's jetzt lang?

The trail system was excellent. It was impossible to get lost with all the sign posts, and best of all: there were separate routes for mountain bikers and hikers.

Of course we knew beforehand that we wouldn't be alone on this trek. The view on the peak of Matterhorn was a tourist magnet indeed. However, it wasn't as crowded as expected, and so we had a lot of opportunities without the odd ignorant person ruining the vista by walking through the motive.

Below is beautiful Riffelsee, likely one of the most depicted alpine lakes. Most of the time the water is perfectly still, and the motive of Matterhorn's reflection makes it the No.1 destination for photographers, amateurs and pros alike.

Moving further downhill the alpine landscape began to change, and softened. We had left barren scenery of ice and rocks behind, and wandered through green mountain pasture.

And there came our culinary reward. On conquering the patio at Riffelhaus 1853 in our muddy boots and dust covered clothes we demanded refreshments and food. It promptly came in form of spritzers and tarte flambée, and while relishing in sips on the first, the latter was wolfed down without further ado.

By the way: Toblerone anyone? - Ach übrigens... will jemand ein Stück?

This was one of the best vacations ever! (But I say that every time I return from wherever...). Switzerland is a beautiful country, and bonus it's right around the corner, almost literally. We will be back.

  1. Outstanding set of pics SonjaM!!!

Truly amazing to me as well, how unwary and inconsiderate people are about walking into your shot.

Toblerone Mountain, cute, never made the connection. Then again, not a sweets kind of guy anyways, though I do like Toblerone.

Gorgeous peak views, now if only there was a way to get the sidecar rig up there to pose it with them in the background.....

    1. Thank you, Dom. As a picture taker (I certainly don't see myself as a photographer) I always make an effort not to accidentally step into the motive, but most people don't so I have quite a few pics with people walking through ;-)

Once you're on Matterhorn / Gornergrat territory there is no way avoiding Toblerone. It is marketed very well.

I'd knew you'd say that. There is NO WAY that you could get a rig up there. Except for the cog railway (and helicopters) you can't find a road. The terrain is difficult to access. It's a good thing though (and I find myself surprised to say this), but imagine this scenery invaded by motorised vehicles... with this many people visiting the unspoiled mountain world would long have been damaged or destroyed by cars, trucks and tour busses, and yes, two wheelers. Take my word for it: Walking is the best way to explore. And thankfully the railway is naturally limiting access because it isn't cheap and there is a limit to the number of people that can be carried into the mountains ;-)

  2. My word, you guys always take great pictures but these are sublime! Have you ever thought about a change of career to paid travel bloggers?

    Superb post, loved it!

    1. Geoff, glad you enjoyed it. I am a big fan of travel blogging myself, and have subscribed to a handful 'professional tourists' who are very inspiring. Their websites do look a lot more sophisticated than my humble blog though, and with lots of other time consuming media thrown in, and I truly believe that it is hard work to keep the crowds interested.

Not sure I'd embrace this as much as others might do. I enjoy writing my travel diary while not under pressure of having to perform, plus I am lucky enough to have a part-time office job which I truly enjoy, and which conveniently pays for traveling. So no career change in the foreseeable future ;-)

  3. Traumhaft.

  4. Absolutely stunning views. Thanks for sharing your pictures with us. Too bad about Zermatt though, but not totally surprising.

    1. You're very welcome, David. We have been to remote Swiss villages that were kept original, this is why we felt a little taken aback by the fake traditional look of Zermatt. But that's where the mainstream tourists are going (or being guided to), and they demand to be catered and housed in the way they'd expect it to be.

    1. It's kind of ironic to discover Europe's beauty so late. If I had known before, I might just have immigrated to Switzerland instead of Canada... ;-)

  8. Absolutely gorgeous. I too thank you for sharing the pictures of your adventure. Hard to imagine how tall those mountains really are. I am tired just thinking of the hiking, but I bet it felt good.

And with all the Toblerone I ate while we lived in Canada, I never knew it was the Matterhorn pictured on the box.

    1. Believe me, Brandy, we were knackered after the hike (well, after every hike to be honest) but yes, it felt like an accomplishment, and the breathtaking vistas really made up for it.

Next time you enjoy a Toblerone, have a closer look at the picture. There is something else hidden in the shadows...

  9. Liebe Sonja,
Sehr inspirativ... Ich folge Dir - meist still, aber sehr treu!
    Liebe Grüße, Polly
