This year's RV rental had shown us the opportunities and the limitations of traveling in a bigger camper van. Of course it was quite comfortable living and sleeping in this roomy vehicle, and having plenty of storage options (which were mostly left empty due to lack of stuff to put there), but manoeuvring in tight spots and negotiating switchbacks or driving though narrow gorges and tiny villages wasn't the camper van's strong suit. Hence, the recent camping fair Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf had us on the lookout for small a.k.a. agile and practical a.k.a. everyday alternatives.
Das Wohnmobil, welches wir im diesjährigen Urlaub gemietet hatten, hatte uns schnell die Möglichkeiten aber auch die Grenzen dessen aufgezeigt, was ein größeres Wohnmobil ausmacht. Natürlich gab es genügend Raum, um darin bequem leben und schlafen zu können. Auch gab es mehr als genug Stauraumfächer, von denen viele leer blieben, weil wir gar nicht so viel Zeug dabei hatten. Aber beim Einparken auf engen Campingplätzen, beim Fahren über Serpentinen, durch enge Schluchten und Dorfstraßen merkten wir doch, dass es schon mal recht eng wurde und viel Fingerspitzengefühl erforderte. Also schauten wir diesmal auf der Wohnwagen-Messe Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf nach kleinen, d.h. wendigen und praktischen, d.h. alltagstauglichen Alternativen.
One possible Option could be the 5,5m long Pössl Concord Compact. The "bedroom" is under the roof but it's perfectly designed for comfort including a full bathroom. As an add-on we really liked the moveable bike/scooter carrier to bring our Vespa Bella along.
Eine mögliche Option wäre der knapp 5,50m lange Pössl Concorde Compact, in dem man auf recht großer Liegefläche unterm Dach pennt. Auf kleinster Fläche ist hier größter Komfort untergebracht, incl. eines voll ausgestatteten Badezimmers. Dazu würden wir gern so einen beweglichen Fahrrad-/Roller-Träger montieren, um unsere Vespa Bella mitzunehmen.
Simpler but rather not four season compatible would be a normal van with pop-top roof. In this segment you'll find plenty of mom and pop businesses offering a large variety of smart solutions for tiny spaces. And if so inclined, you can even bring your bike along. Alas, it would require quite a bit effort to change the van into sleep mode. And of course, the van comes without the bathroom. But that's what washrooms on campgrounds are for. Well, of course there is water on board, so cleaning or just taking an outdoor shower would be possible, but it's certainly less comfy. However, we found this camper van a very clever solution for mobile living as well as for everyday use. By the way since the VW Diesel gate the van is getting advertised as "model also available petrol powered".
Etwas einfacher, aber sicherlich nicht vier-Jahreszeiten-kompatibel wäre ein normaler Van mit Aufstelldach. In diesem Segment gibt es viele kleine Wohnwagen-Schmieden, die sich gegenseitig mit pfiffigen Raumwunder-Lösungen übertreffen. Das tolle an so einem Fahrzeug wäre sicherlich die Alltagstauglichkeit, denn so ein Format passt sowohl auf den heimischen Stellplatz als auch in die Tiefgarage. Und wenn man so will, kann das Mopped auch mit... Allerdings ist das Schlafengehen dann mit mehr Vorbereitungsaufwand verbunden und es gibt kein Badezimmer. Da man Wasser an Bord hat, geht Katzenwäsche und Außendusche immer, aber ansonsten müsste man die Waschräume des Campingplatzes in Anspruch nehmen, was wir sowieso die meiste Zeit getan haben. Wir finden, das ist ein gelungenes Spaßmobil für Alltag und Urlaub. Der Hersteller weist dezent darauf hin, dass dieses Modell natürlich auch in der so viel umweltfreundlicheren Benzin-Version zu haben ist. (Stichwort: VW Diesel-Gate).
The choices of recreational vehicles were overwhelming, and have given us a lot of food for thought. Maybe we should rent one of those tiny camper vans to check out how we'd manage in a confined space...
After the tiring walk over the fair grounds we took a most welcome and deserved break at this cute Espresso-Mobil before heading home. It had been a long and exhausting day.
Die Auswahl der Wohnwagen-Hersteller war riesig groß und hat uns wieder neue Ideen gegeben. Vielleicht mieten wir uns mal so einen ganz kleinen Camper und schauen, wie lange wir es darin aushalten...
Nach all der ermüdenden Anstrengung und Lauf-Kilometern auf der Messe hatten wir vor unserer Rückfahrt bei diesem Espresso-Mobil erst einmal eine verdiente Pause und Stärkung verdient.
Back at home: We will continue with our research and meanwhile dream of our next vacation...
Zwischenzeitlich werden wir zuhause fleißig weiter recherchieren und schon mal vom nächsten Urlaub träumen...

ReplyDeletemeine Tante nebst Onkel, beide aus deiner Gegend, sind jedes Jahr mit 5 Kindern im VW T 2 Westphalia, später im T 3 in Urlaub gefahren und das hat immer gereicht :-)
Mein Traum wäre ja auch ein T-Camper.

Jaha, aber der Schwarzwälder an sich ist ja eher kurz gebaut, da bekommst Du bestimmt locker 7 Leute in den Van. Aber was machst Du mit einem fast 2m Mann der überall anstößt...? Für mich allein wäre das T-Modell der ideale Reisebegleiter, aber wir schauen mal, was ein Praxistest ergibt.
DeleteI like that one in the last picture as well. The class C motorhome you used on your last trip looked huge compared to what I've heard about people using in Europe. But then again, it's probably like driving a delivery truck around town.
ReplyDeleteDepending on where you're planning to drive or stay, any size is possible in Europe, Richard. But our preference currently seems to be parking/camping on small campgrounds as close as possible to trail heads. In class C motorhomes one rather not drives on single lanes though...
DeleteYes, the one in the last picture would be best IMHO as well. But, restoring one could be iffy. Something with a raisable roof would be a requirement as I would quickly tire of moving around inside stooped over! I can well empathize with the limitations of a larger RV, truly. Sometimes, I wish we'd gone with the camper truck but the lack of a bathroom....

DeleteAs for lack of bathroom... you could always carry a small compost thingy. However, boon docking isn't something you'd do in Europe, or you'll get fined. And the campgrounds we stayed had excellent washrooms. We never got to use the shower in the RV.
Composting toilets remind me of field latrines in the Army in terms of olfactory impact....probably no smell to them but that's what they do for me. Yeah, I guess there's no space for real boondocking there in Europe....
DeleteWhen I was traveling France in the early 90s, a VW Van, self converted, was all we had. Didn't need more although you get really creative regarding toilets and showers.
ReplyDeleteNowadays I'd go either extreme minimal (VW California without bathroom) and or go one up and take a Mercedes Sprinter based model with short wheelbase with a small bathroom for emergency use. We found that using campgrounds and sport harbors (along the Atlantic coast) worked okay for us. Would probably be the same today.

DeleteAnd we were on motorbikes and slept in a tent back in the days... French bathrooms and their questionable "conditions" had to make you creative indeed. We will evaluate the options. There are some great little businesses who do interior van conversions, maybe we'll have something built one day...

Mich hat das auch direkt angefixt, aber dann müsste es evtl. ein kleines Mopped sein.
DeleteHaving so much fun you are looking to purchase now? I imagine with the price of rentals it would be worth it if you are planning on traveling this way often. Sounds like fun.
ReplyDeleteWe are certainly watching the market, Brandy. However, there are a still quite a few aspects to consider before we take the leap making such an investment. But we like the idea very much.

ReplyDeleteIch mag komischerweise unseren kleinen Truckcamper auch lieber als den 10m Anhaenger, auch wenn der komfortabler ist.
Dafür schwitzen wir hier bei abnormalen September-Temperaturen von 28 Grad. Das haben wir nach dem kühlen und verregneten Sommer wohl verdient.
ReplyDeleteVor ein paar Wochen sahen wir ein kleines Fiat-Wohnmobil mit St. Galler-Nummernschildern bei Walmart in North Bay stehen: Babyboomers auf Nordamerikatour. Nettes Fahrzeug, klein und kompakt. Viel Spass bei der Suche.
