Westweg Section 10 + 11: Cross Border Experience - Westweg Etappe 10 + 11: Grenzerfahrungen

I'm now on the final leg of my section hike through the Black Forest by way of the long-distance trail Westweg. Starting point is at Notschrei mountain pass, it's cold, rainy and foggy, and for the first time I get a chance at testing some of my rain gear. Another 70 kilometres (44 miles) lie ahead of me.

It's a short walk on a late Friday afternoon, a mere eight kilometres across the mountain ridge to Widener Eck. On the other side I will be united with my better half at the hotel Gut Lilienfein.

I am mostly walking through mist, alone, views are limited, or rather zero at times. I hear the cattle more than seeing them. They don't seem to like the weather much, their lowing sounding like foghorns over the mountain pasture.

No view today - keine Aussicht heute

One and a half hours later I have reached my destination. I take a quick picture of the Westweg Gate at Widener Eck, and then follow the trail to the hotel. It's dry and warm there, what a pleasure. After a quick shower and a change of clothing hubby and I enjoy a delicious dinner together. A perfect start into the weekend.

Saturday we have an early start, but with a breakfast buffet with nothing left to desire, all is well with the world. And... we have a view.

At Wiedener Eck I part ways with my hubby, and meet up with my temporary hiking buddy. Together we conquer the mountain top of Belchen, at 1,414 m the forth highest peak in the Black Forest. We make excellent progress, which is necessary as we have another peak (Blauen) and more than thirty kilometres ahead of us.

The weather forecast promised a dry spell, and it stays dry indeed, the wind however, blows with a mean force, and leaves me shivering and seeking for shelter. High time for a coffee at the Belchen restaurant.

Yay, it's open and there's a good cuppa waiting.

The storm is chasing the clouds away, and gives way to spectacular views. A bit of a downer though, is the fact that is will be all downhill from here.

Another 27 km to go. - Noch 27 km.

Regional wildlife - Wilde Tiere

The trail is steep and slippery at times but a railing protects from a too fast vertical descent.

Half down the next milestone is in sight, the mountain of Blauen. Alright, it's going upwards again. No worries, I can do this.

Es geht also mal wieder bergauf. Aber keine Sorge, das schaffe ich schon.

There is a tower on top of the Blauen, this is where I'm headed. I am walking this way. My feet are taking it easy!

Although shrouded in clouds for most of my ascent I get the chance of a view from above. Mountain Blauen, at 1,165m is the last of the >1,000m mountain peaks on the trail.

Somewhere down below in the valley of the river Rhine lies Basel, Switzerland. I am preparing for my long descent into the valley.

It's getting late. I am texting the B&B that I won't be arriving before 7 p.m. The trail is stretching out.  My feet are getting really tired. I feel the last kilometres in my legs, but eventually I reach the town of Kandern, where a shower awaits, where I can lay my head down and my legs up.

The next morning while I am at the breakfast table I get a pleasant surprise. I am surrounded by fellow Canadians, and a lovely chat about my second home ensues until I have to leave for my final leg of the trail. The Westweg is calling me for the last time. I am on the trail at 9 a.m. it's still a bit chilly but I am at a fast pace, my final destination is pulling me in.

I am traversing a narrow ravine called Wolfsschlucht (wolf gorge), and have to squeeze myself plus backpack through the gully.

One of the more luxurious hiking shelters with a fire pit. Nice!

Eine Wanderhütte de Luxe mit Feuerstelle. Sehr schön!

Nature retreats and gives way to urban settings.

Die Natur weicht einem urbaneren Umfeld.

Castle Rötteln: The fortress sits on a spur, and is one of the largest castle ruins in Baden. It was founded around the 11th century. History and architecture is usually right up my alley, but I get distracted by a beer garden and the opportunity to get coffee, cake and a spritzer.

At Lörrach I walk through the last trail gate.

Now moving on towards Basel.

Der Weg bringt mich Basel immer näher.

Signs of civilisation... NOT.

Zeichen der Zivilisation...? Wohl eher nicht.

Looks like another great opportunity for a break, but the hut too close to town.

Almost in Switzerland! - Fast in der Schweiz!

Crossing the vineyards of Markgräfler Country I get to taste some of the various grapes. They are delicious and look ready to be harvested.

I made it! I am crossing the border from Germany to Switzerland. There isn't (and hasn't been for a long time) a guard on duty, also the signs and the barrier look rather rusty and unused.

Another ten clicks to Basel railway station. The trail follows the river Wiesen through the green belt of the city.

And suddenly it's over. I am not quite prepared for the big city noises, the crowds, the traffic. Too much, too loud, too soon.

I am crossing the fair grounds. Nothing going on here.

Finally I reach the river Rhine, and the inner city of Basel. After roughly three hundred kilometres over eleven sections my trek has ultimately come to an end.

Basel railway station. From here it's a mere two our ride back home.

A final snapshot: the bus' destination calls out: Wanderstraße = Hiking Street.

Ein Schnappschuss am Rande: Die Westweg-Wanderin und die Wanderstraße.

Freshened up and ready to board the train.

The bullet train takes me home too fast, the scenery is rushing by. My thoughts and heart are still in the forest though, on the trail.

  1. 70km is not just a walk in the park! The fog makes for some nice pictures. It doesn’t do much for the scenic shots but for the trail photos, I like the atmosphere.

    1. Richard, I've seen my fair share of scenic views, so the misty atmosphere in the forest was a welcome change. I could have done without the rain though, but that's part of the experience.

    1. Well thank you Geoff, I had no choice and this is one way to cope with the fact that I won't likely return to Canada (except for visits)...

  8. If I am fortunate to come for a visit, and you suggest going for a walk, I'll be asking some pointed questions, the first of which will likely be "walk?"

Congratulations Sonja! My Vespa's odometer only has slightly more kilometers to its credit than you logged on that one 'walk'.

    1. Well, David. Walking is the new ride ;-) The key questions would have to be: how far, and which direction...

LG Bianka
