Marzipan town Lübeck

Another important city of the former Hanseatic League. We enter the old town through the castle gate. The city core is surrounded by the river Trave. We walk past the Holy Spirit Hospital (built at the end of the 13th century and one of the oldest social institutions in the world) towards the cathedral, where we find a small but fine Italian restaurant (Florentina) that is open all day.

After a delicious afternoon meal, we visit the 12th century cathedral, which had been partly destroyed and rebuilt in 1942. This year the cathedral celebrates its 850th birthday. Unfortunately, the building is in a dilapidated condition.

The Kaisertor (emperor gate) also looks as if it has seen better days. We walk through a graffiti-smeared, littered gate to the old Trave and stroll towards Malerwinkel (painter's corner). 

Finally, the salt storage facilities from the 16th to 18th centuries come into view. The famous Holstentor (Holstein gate) is right around the corner. Lübeck's landmark from 1478 is the only gate that didn't fall victim to the industrial revolution like the other gates of the former city fortifications.

Last but not least, a visit (or let's call it looting) to the Niederegger marzipan factory should not be missed. Our families can look forward to delicious souvenirs.
