Historic background:

Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179) was a German Benedictine abbess, mystic, composer, writer, and visionary. Born into a noble family, she experienced vivid religious visions from an early age, which she later documented in writings such as Scivias (Know the Ways), Liber Vitae Meritorum (Book of the Rewards of Life), and Liber Divinorum Operum (Book of Divine Works). These writings were not only theological but also encompassed cosmology, medicine, and natural history, reflecting her holistic view of the universe.

Hildegard entered a convent at the age of eight and became abbess of the abbey of Rupertsberg near Bingen, succeeding her cousin and mentor Jutta von Sponheim. She was a highly respected spiritual leader, sought after for her counsel by popes, bishops, and rulers. In addition to her religious and musical contributions, Hildegard made significant strides in herbal medicine and science, writing Physica and Causae et Curae, texts that detail medicinal plants, animal remedies, and therapeutic practices. Hildegard's work and influence extend far beyond her time, and she was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 2012 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 2014, recognizing her profound intellectual and spiritual legacy.

The Trail:

The Hildegard von Bingen Pilgerwanderweg (Hildegard of Bingen Pilgrimage Trail) is a scenic hike connecting key locations associated with Hildegard, and dedicated to her life, works, and spiritual legacy. Located in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany, the trail offers pilgrims and hikers the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of this extraordinary medieval mystic, abbess, and visionary. The trail spans approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles), passing through beautiful landscapes, vineyards, and forests, as well as historic towns and villages.

The Trailhead:

The city Idar-Oberstein in the river Nahe valley is primarily known for its historic gemstone industry, which has been an integral part of the town's economy for centuries. Downtown a remarkable chapel has been carved into a steep rock face which is now one of the most iconic landmarks in the region.
