We only get one run at life so might as well have fun on the way. (Geoff James)

Ain't no Mountain high enough...
We almost couldn't believe it: Finally a Sunday morning without rain. Last time we tried this route we were stopped short by deluge and thunderstorms.
In the beginning it was a four kilometre (a bit over two miles) uphill battle with 400m (1300ft) elevation gain. Not sure if that's a lot but it sure felt like a mountain.
With 15% incline at times we didn't manage to stay in the saddle all the time, and we stopped at one of the Kneipp basins. In the background Roland refreshed himself by treading water.
At halftime we were presented with a marvellous view over one of the many valleys of the Black Forest. It was getting warmer, and the humidity factor was high, nevertheless we pushed ourselves to the limit. After all we aren't spring chickens any more.
We made it! We survived! And we were reasonable proud of our accomplishment. We found a bench and enjoyed the view while destroying the carried along liquids.
After a few minutes rest and a power bar we were ready again to explore the hill crest. We were passed only once by some more ambitious mountain bikers on high end Fullies in respective spandex attire.
From a previous hike Roland knew of an artesian well where we replenished our water supplies. The water smelled mildly sulphuric but the taste was like fresh from the tap.
This is how it looks when the weather is fair in the Black Forest. We are mighty lucky to be able to live an a region providing jobs and such a wonderful scenery.
An hour later we were back to cloudy skies, but made it back into the valley without getting wet for a change. If the rest of the summer would be like this, staycation isn't so bad.

A Walk in the Tree Tops
With summer solstice only a handful of days away you'd think that the weather should be nice, but temperatures were annoyingly low at a mere 11°C (52°F) last Sunday, no Tees and shorts but bundling up with windbreakers and Buffs. A short drive would take us to our destination in the Northern Black Forest close to Bad Wildbad. Back in 2014 a curious pathway was opened to the public on Sommerberg ("Summer Mountain"): The Tree Top Walkway, an elevated wooden structure on level with the tree tops.
The trail itself is fairly short, a mere 1.25km (not even a mile) but 20 meters above the forest floor, and comes with spectacular views. To make the hike more interesting an obstacle course with moving parts, ropes and chains has been installed in frequent intervals. It was a lot of fun, not only for the kids. At the end of the walkway a tower awaits, and leads in circles to the top of the world (ok, trees).
On a side note we discovered a nice and very motorcycle compatible stretch of road that we will hopefully get to test ride soon... should it ever dry up. Come on, bring on the summer.

Stuck in the mud
Sorry guys, still got no motorcycle content, but still moving two wheels (the bicycle is way easier to clean). The ongoing rainfalls have left the earth saturated. There are puddles and soft mushy tracks all over the place. So I found myself wallowing in tractor ruts. More than once I got stuck in the mud, and had to push. I guess that's where the term pushbike must come from.
I had a bit of a pucker moment when lost traction on a wooden bridge while negotiating the corner... I almost went down into the ditch. Note to self: moss covered wet planks make for a slippery matter.
While pausing for a breather at the radium spring I encountered deer. Alas, by the time I got out my cell for a quick snap, they were back hiding in the woods.
No longer protected by the leafy canopy the rain hit me with full force, henceforth I took a shortcut over the fence, and barely noticed by the cattle let it roll over the pasture towards the valley while dodging cowpat on my way down.
