Welcome 2021 - Not sad, that 2020 is over and done with!

Finally! 2021 has arrived, and we almost missed it due to its silent entrance. Fireworks and gatherings fell victim to the pandemic regulations, so it had been a very quiet evening, and we were absorbed in eating raclette  (a Swiss dish) and playing board games. 

At midnight we noted some "Happy New Year" cheers across the block from neighbours standing on their balconies raising their glasses of bubbly, exchanging best wishes for 2021. That was it, then we were back to our game.

We are somewhat glad, that 2020 is gone, but it wasn't all bad for us. 

The good stuff:

No losses (thankfully), family and friends are well.

Camping trips in Germany: Bavaria (Allgäu and Altmühl valley), Hegau and Odenwald (our new playground)

Vacation in Austria

A new job for Roland and relocation to the Rhine-Neckar region ("Kurpfalz", vicinity of Heidelberg)

Various day trips in said area

Over 1300 km (800 mi) of hiking distance accomplished.

The fails:

Hiking the Way of St. James has been put on hold indefinitely und planned events or concerts had been cancelled. But that's about it.

Endlich ist 2021 da, und wir haben es fast nicht mitbekommen, weil es sich so leise herangeschlichen hat. Feuerwerk und Versammlungen waren ja wegen der Quarantäneauflagen untersagt, und so wurde es ein angenehm ruhiger Silvesterabend zu zweit bei Raclette und Brettspielen. Um Mitternacht wurden wir dann durch die Rufe unserer Nachbarn, die mit Sektgläsern bewaffnet auf dem Balkon stehend das neue Jahr begrüßten, aus unserem Spiel gerissen. Das war's dann, 2020. Aber es war ja nicht alles nur schlecht.

Positives:

Wir haben niemanden verloren. Freunden und Familie geht es gut.

Negatives:

Der Jakobsweg ist auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben. Konzerte und Veranstaltungen, die wir gebucht hatten, fanden leider nicht statt. Das ist aber auch schon alles...

Still alive and kicking - Ein Lebenszeichen

After all activities succumbed to yet another lockdown, there has not been much to do lately besides the walks around the block. Nothing worth reporting happened, really. Christmas came and went, New Year is waiting to make an entrance, and we are all hoping for the betterment of the current situation. 

But we are not complaining. If staying at home is the worst that can happen to us, we have no reason to be upset. We have a warm and comfy shelter, a regular income, lots of boardgames, a fully loaded ebook reader, a Netflix account, plus the fridge and cupboards are stocked with plenty culinary options (and wine!). So, all is well with the world. Wishing all of you out there a happy and healthy New Year. Keep calm, keep well, and get vaccinated.

Nachdem alle Aktivitäten dem erneuten Lockdown zum Opfer gefallen waren, hatten wir außer den Spaziergängen um den Pudding nicht viel zu tun und es gab entsprechend wenig Interessantes zu berichten. Weihnachten kam und ging, und nun steht das Neue Jahr vor der Tür.

Wir sind sicherlich alle voller Erwartung und Hoffnung, dass sich die derzeitige Situation bald wieder entspannen wird. Doch beschweren wollen wir uns nicht. Wir haben ein warmes und gemütliches Zuhause, ein regelmäßiges Einkommen, genügend Gesellschaftsspiele, massenhaft Ebooks und ein Netflix Abo. Zudem  sind Kühlschrank und Vorratskammer gut gefüllt mit kulinarischen Leckereien (und Wein!). Alles wird gut.

Euch allen da draußen ein glückliches und gesundes Neues Jahr. Bleibt gelassen, bleibt gesund und lasst Euch impfen.

Darkness falls - Es wird dunkel.

The latest rules don't grant any wiggle room (or do they?): Further restrictions with regards to private gatherings are going to be implemented come December, there will be no Christmas markets, and restaurants, bars and everything that is fun, especially this time of the year must remain closed. However, the city and the retail sector are trying to fight this darkness a little: store opening times are being extended to make shopping possible while keeping distancing rules, and restaurants are switching to catering and delivery services. In addition colourful light installations illuminating historic buildings shall restore some Christmas atmosphere. And some shops sell mulled wine for take-out. We're so there  ;-)

Die neuesten Verordnungen sind eindeutig (oder?): Es erwarten uns weitere Reduzierung privater Zusammenkünfte im Dezember, es wird keine Weihnachtsmärkte geben, Restaurants, Bars und alles, was gerade in der dunklen Jahreszeit Spaß macht, muss geschlossen bleiben. Doch unsere Stadt und der Einzelhandel versuchen, ein wenig gegen dieses Dunkel anzukämpfen: Ladenöffnungszeiten werden verlängert, um Einkäufe unter Einhaltung von Abstandsregeln möglich zu machen, und Restaurant steigen wieder auf Catering und Lieferservice um. Für weihnachtliche Stimmung sollen farbenfrohe Leuchtinstallationen sorgen, die historische Gebäude anstrahlen. Und mancher Laden verkauft Glühwein als take-out. Da sind wir doch dabei.
