We entered the park before the toll booth opened and had the rim road almost for ourselves, a little later than anticipated but got some spectacular vistas nevertheless.
There are countless view points and we took the time to stop at each to take pictures.
The natural sandstone columns look indeed like stalagmites in a cave, only that someone removed the ceiling.
Just in time with the crowds arriving we moved on and took scenic highway 12 through Escalante, the Grand Staircase National Monument. Besides this area being a geologist's wet dream featuring canyons, cliffs and plateaus and breathtaking vistas in all colours of the Earth, it was obviously a bit off the beaten track, and also sparsely populated, so we had it all to ourselves.
The rim road, the road only as wide as the rim is...
Here we discovered the best coffee of the trip at Kiva's Koffeehouse...
and what a vista!
We stopped for a picnic break at the Petrified Forest state park and had to clean up the mess first ;-)
A petrified tree trunk
The next attraction was the scenic route through Capitol Reef National Park, a 100 miles long 'warp in the Earth crust' defined by a geological form called waterpocket fold. More rock porn for the inclined amateur geologist.
We arrived late in Moab, and asked for a good Italian restaurant. We should have known better than to follow the recommendation that the guy at the reception provided us with. He looked more than a gourmand than a gourmet, hence the pizza was everything but Italian, rather a huge cheese pie. We gave up and boxed the rest, which was another two meals worth, and fell instantly into a food coma.

ReplyDeleteappears you had a great trip. We were caught in a snow storm in Monticello, then went west to Torrey. there was an avalanche in Bryce Canyon the morning we arrived and they closed the rim road. I love Moab, did you try the Pink Jeep tour ?

ReplyDeleteappears you had a great trip. We were caught in a snow storm in Monticello and headed east to Torrey where we were in a blizzard. When we reached Bryce Canyon there was an avalanche which closed the Rim Road and most viewpoints were closed. At least you had good sunny weather

Nice photos.
ReplyDeleteRemember visiting the Petrified Forest as a kid. We kept seeing signs and I was very excited, but when we got there it was just a bunch of rocks on the ground. I wonder what I'd think now?
Thanks for the share.
Rock porn, I like that.
ReplyDeleteGreat set of pictures....I hope to ride those locations myself someday. Were there good spots to pose one's motorcycle with the "rock porn" in the background?

Looks absolutely amazing, SonjaM.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of a lot of the things we saw this summer on our trip, but we did not do justice to Utah. We had intended a bit more time in that state on our way back, but it just never happened. Three weeks of riding and a lot of rain at the time, we just crapped out. I'm sorry, though, I missed some really beautiful things.

Beautiful pictures of the parks. Bryce is easily one of my favorite places but the other parks in Utah are close behind. I did a lot of field work in the northern part of Utah and Wyoming so I always managed to work in a trip through the parks when heading for the field.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tour!
Stunning photos Sonja. The pictures of the rock are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the food porn. I think you must have been in a cheese coma, the pizza looks a little heavy on the cheese, lol.
What a great trip. Super photos! Never visited Bryce Canyon, but I loved Arches NP. Utah has some incredible places.
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful, especially as what appears to be the complete absence of hoards of tourists!
ReplyDeleteI am so pleased you saw Bryce Canyon at Dawn. It is a fabulous time of day to see the stunning beauty of the place. It is a small world - I stopped at the Kiva Coffeehouse as well, and admired the terrific views. More great pictures Sonja.
