Got Sidetracked

We had planned do drive up to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon but we got stuck (in a good way) in and around Page. There wasn't a specific reason to visit Page, other than grab a bite to eat and refuel the car but we were fascinated by the area. This city was founded in the late Fifties to provide housing for the construction workers during building of the Glen Canyon dam, which formed Lake Powell, and from then became the gateway of the wonderful Glen Canyon National Recreational Area.
 Nice how the sign harmonizes with the background.
Parking was free (!). The dam visitor center was free (!) and provided excellent documentation about the construction, as well as as a geological exhibition.
 Looks like Planet of the Apes all over again.
 Let's go to the beach!
The water was crystal clear, and warm. This is how Grand Canyon would have looked like if flooded.
The car was reasonable challenged with the deep sand, and we almost got stuck. Oh, did we miss our four-wheel drive on that terrain. we would have had endless fun in the dunes.
Endless roads, no traffic, and scorching heat. Not a good place to have a breakdown.

Not sure if I would want to live in a house that is part of a rock. On the other hand... I live in a concrete highrise building, so that would be something different.
Kudos to the riders, they were in ATGATT despite the heat.

Needless to say we never made it to the North Rim. Sometimes indeed the reward is in the journey, and not the destination.

  1. A continuing set of great pictures Sonja....I wonder how my rig would do in that loose sand, probably get stuck.

  4. @Charlie6: The sand was really tricky, but I would have dared to ride the Vespa in it ;-)
    @Chillertek: Thanks, I enjoy being on the road no matter which means of transport.
    @Canajun: Pfft! ;-)
