A picture perfect Ride - Final part of the Journey to the HD Euro Festival

After a surprisingly tasty dinner at the hotel and a good night’s sleep we were rested and ready to roll the next morning spot on at 8:30 a.m. With a mix of fast and slower roads we meandered through the Drome river valley. The temperatures were pleasantly rising, and we had incredibly blue skies. Fleece shells and winter gloves got tucked away, and were swapped against summer gear. We met more and more motorcycles on the road, most of them Harley Davidson branded, and likely on their way to the rally.

There were a few photo stops (a.k.a. potty breaks) in between, the most spectacular being the village of Sisteron, also called 'The gateway to Provence' due to its location between two canyon walls. Wikipedia tells that the area has been inhabited since over 4000 years. The town is located at the river Durance, with the weirdly shaped mountain Rocher de la Baume hovering over the village.

Lunch break was held in Castellane (I  believe, I lost a bit track of the route after all...) after a little mishap of one of the riders.

The bike decided to take a nap in the shrubs, and it took five guys to get it out of there. Fortunately nobody got hurt and nothing was broken.

Next up would be the Gorges Du Verdon, formed by the Verdon River, and considered one of the most beautiful canyons in Europe. The turquoise coloured water certainly has a special part in it.

It was quite tempting to rip off the gear and go for a swim, but I wasn’t appropriately equipped for the dive. Kudos to Charlie and Big John who jumped off the cliff wearing only undies…

We continued our journey and were rewarded with a grand view of Lake of Sainte-Croix, a man-made lake built in the 70’s.

For me, the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur is the best part of France. Great weather and excellent food is almost guaranteed everywhere, there are nice people, twisty roads, and the region is surrounded by mountains in the north and the Mediterranean Sea in the south, bordered by Italy in the East, and another lovely province called Languedoc-Roussillon in the west. What’s not to love?

Late afternoon we had reached our final destination, the Les Jardins in St. Maxime, with prime parking spots for motorcycles right in front of the hotel.

Here the official part of Gary’s tour ended, and we were released into the wild world of the Harley Davidson Euro Festival. After freshening up I took the opportunity to ride pillion with Charlie on his KTM into the former fishing village turned posh place for the mega rich a.k.a. St. Tropez, where the only thing that comes for free are the picturesque vistas. (8€ for a Coke... need I say more?).

What a day, what a ride! Thank you, Gary for this wonderful trip. Worth! Every! Mile!

  7. As usual, great pictures Sonja. Although it doesn't look too appealing on the map, that last day of riding to St Tropez is my favourite. It has the terrific combination of wonderful roads and spectacular scenery that is good for any rider. I am really pleased you enjoyed the trip. I am looking forward to reading about your ride home.
