The Mediterranean Job

Meanwhile Roland had arrived on his new to him Suzuki Burgman, a.k.a. Whitey II. His bike made for quite the contrast between all the American Iron but instead of scooter bashing, there was respect and a warm welcome for the brave man riding 1,000 km in two days on a 400cc two-wheeler in order to meet up with his wife again.

Two up to the grocery store.
The necessities of life: wine, baguette, chips and such

A vacation at the French Riviera wouldn't be complete without riding along the coast towards Cannes.

Our old battle grounds. Each of us have fond memories of various camping trips in and around this lovely area. Too bad we didn't know each other back then, and we never met...

This picturesque stretch of road is meandering along the coast, through fishing villages and overshadowed by the Massif de l'Esterel.

Port du Poussai at Cap Dramont

The red volcanic rock makes for a wonderful contrast to the vegetation and the blue skies. We had left early to escape any major traffic, and succeeded, well mostly.

Only shortly before Cannes, traffic had built up nonetheless due to the upcoming Film Festival. We turned around to avoid getting caught in the middle, and rode the slow way back through the Esterel mountains towards St. Maxime.

In the mountains we once again had the roads all to ourselves. It was getting quite warm in our gear and at one point we were very much looking forward to taking a refreshing plunge into that lovely hotel pool.

  1. I prefer Gary on the Burgman to pink crocs(tm). Well done to Roland - horizons unlimited?

  3. Beautiful pics Sonja and Roland. Nothing beats the hauling factor of a scooter for grocery shopping. I love Roland's scoot, it is perfectly lovely! Enjoy your trip!

    1. Thanks, Dom. Positioning your steed for a photo op is a bit less challenging when the group is smaller...

  5. Roland, the Bergman is by no means a scooter. It's a comfortable, 400 cc touring machine for those who have legs long enough to straddle it. Gary looked mighty fine on it - watch out. How quickly people have forgotten that not long ago a 400cc machine was considered a 'big' bike and serious riders traversed the continent on them. The perfect ride needs only to fit the rider and his needs comfortably, be able to keep up with the traffic and have a little extra power when needed in a pinch; I know you have all that after all I doubt you are heading for the race track.
Sonja, have no regrets about the past ... the two of you had not met then, but you are there together now, it was meant to be - glad to see you are enjoying it. Great pictures. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Karen. The Burgy is certainly a big enough bike to tour around, and nothing short of power on the highway. Roland loved his scoot while in Canada, and he is happy that he found the perfect replacement.
