Whitey's Maiden Voyage

Roland: Well it all got a little bit fast-paced in the end. I received ownership papers for Whitey the weekend before, had it registered on Tuesday, went for a business trip for Wednesday and Thursday (from which I returned only at 7:30 pm thanks to Germany's railway strike) and started my trip to South France on Friday morning... This meant getting up at 6 AM, doing all the necessary household chores you usually do before such a trip, packing my bags, shooting one last photo and getting on the road at 8:30 AM!

DAY1:

From the first moment on Whitey purred on his single cylinder as if he had waited for an opportunity like that for years. Pretty quickly we passed the French border and got deep into Alsace territory, with all the fields and smooth hills.

By noon I had 200 km down and needed a little break. I actually managed to sleep on a rock(!) for an hour or so. I woke up again just in time for the first drops of rain that would follow me until the end of the leg of the journey.

Note to self: I better double check routes created on my Navigon GPS-App with "scenic road" checkbox on. Although the roads are indeed very pretty they are quite slow, and you might hit unexpected obstacles! After this encounter I switched to the fastest route, otherwise I would probably still be on my way down...

At 7:30 PM and after exactly 500km I finally reached my goal for the day, the very nice hotel and restaurant "Auberge de la Source" in the Rhône valley somewhere in the east of Lyon.

I felt that I deserved an Entrecôte with French Fries, plus I really enjoyed a glass of local Vin Rouge. After that I was totally knackered and fell into bed and to sleep pretty much right away...

DAY2:

After a nice breakfast I was on my way again at 9 AM. Weather has improved slightly so I did not need my rain gear today. BUT it was actually quite cold, so I did indeed enjoy the grip heaters, especially because I had switched the Navigon back to scenic routes and started conquering one pass after the other...

On my way to Col des Ecouges, near Vinay...

...and a few miles later!

Shortly after magnificient Col De Rousset, a pass with quite strong fall winds.

The terrain is getting more and more southern!

Really tired now, but just one more hour to go!

Day 2 turned out to be another 500 km ride, without any kind of incident or oopsies. I arrived in St. Maxime around 7 PM (and still had quite a program ahead of me as reported by Sonja, which lasted till well after midnight). This was probably my most strenuous ride up to date, especially due to all the passes I rode. Conclusion: Riding solo was real fun, but I do enjoy riding in a small group of two or three much more!

Whiteys Jungfernfahrt

  1. Bööööh, du traust dich ja was. Respekt!

    1. Ja,was tu ich nicht alles, um zu Sonja zu kommen :-) Aber ich hatte dank meiner Erfahrungen mit Whitey I genügend Vertrauen in Maschine und Mensch!

Also nichts unmögliches!

  3. Wow Roland, some big days and you did well. Just a hint, if you follow straight lines your trip will be shorter. ;) Looks like you took the wonderful long way and I'm jealous of your trip.

    1. It actually DID look like a straight line when I checked the full route on my iPhone. Who could have expected that roads like that would turn up?! Good thing I did not check in detail, I don't think I would have done this trip if I had known...

  4. Way to go Roland for such a solo trip and your first on Whitey II at that.

Lovely photos - definitely worth the ride.

    1. Whitey II did a great job. Now I will allow him a full inspection that I should have done BEFORE the trip :-)

    1. Plus a total surprise. I went through a tunnel, and when I came out again I was on top of a pass! With high speed clouds just above my head! They were literally falling down from the mountain top. Quite scary, actually....

  7. That last map looks like quite the road. I enjoyed the photos and the write-up of the trip. It sounds like a great trip. I still haven't decided if I prefer solo or very small group trips...

    1. I think very small groups are more fun. I have the tendency to continue rolling once I am going (same in a car), so stopping for photos is more difficult for me when I am solo. When Sonja is with me we do stop more often!

  8. Yes, avoid scenic or windy road gps route planners like the plague! I try to preplan routes using viamichelin, common sense and TYRE from where I load the route onto my gps. I always go wrong somewhere, or the gps fails 18 miles form the destination.

    1. The surprising thing was that Navigon is just your standard iPhone GPS program. I never ever expected that it would come up with scenic routes like that! Next time I will be more cautious and avoid these time-consuming delays by choosing the straightest possible roads I can find...

  11. Wohooo! Absolutely epic! Now that I have finally a bit of time to check in on updates, I remember that Andrea told me you got a new big scooter! Awesome! You're really prepping for the Iron Butt Rally here, right?
