Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach and then some

We left Eskifjördur, and the easternmost point of our journey and meandered southwest along the coastal ring road. We got a mixed bag of weather, and the fog and clouds were adding even more drama to the scenery.

It was high time for a coffee break! We stopped at the former Hanseatic League trading outpost Djupivogur.  We had birthday cake at the Langabud, a historic warehouse, and today a cafe with a tiny museum.

A few hundred meters outside the village you'll find eggs, and they are not the usual ones fit for consumption. They are the stone sculptures of the Icelandic artist Sigurdur Gudmundsson and consist of three dozens eggs representing the bird species in the area.

It began to rain hard. We found a nice spot on this black volcanic beach, parked our car and listened to the symphony of drops pounding on the metal roof, and waves crashing against the rocks. It was actually very soothing.

Certainly the highlights of the day - despite the bad weather - where the glaciers and the ice lagoons. A washed out gravel trail lead to Hoffelsjökull, which we had completely to ourselves at times. No tourist busses, no other cars. It was so quiet that one could hear the glacier breathe, and the air so clean that one could smell the ash embedded in the ice. A magical place.

Time was flying by, and we had to push on until we saw a misty river. For some reason the water was warm enough to create some fog that lingered in the river bed.

Glaciers were present everywhere now, which isn't really a surprise, given that 11% of Iceland is covered by ice, and most of them present in the south eastern region, with Vatnajökull being the largest.

Here we were at the touristic hot spot of Jökulsarlon, a huge glacier lake with an outlet to the ocean. Let the pictures do the talking. It certainly couldn't get better than this.

The outgoing tide pulls the icebergs into the sea, and with the incoming tide some of them get beached on the black sand. The icy bits and pieces are swirled around by the waters, until they begin to look like carved diamonds.

Yes, more ice! We took a short detour to visit Svinafellsjökull, also one of the less traveled sights in Iceland. It also has a huge glacial lake to boot, with fog lingering over it surface, and a spectacular view on the nearby glacier.

We crossed the devastated land of Skeidararsandur, which is likely the worlds largest glacial outwash,   and drove through regions called dark names like Eldhraun, and Myrdalssandur. Is this Mordor?

Our next stopp was at the southernmost village Vik y Myrdal. The area is famous for its huge lava beach and the volcanic dykes of Reynisdrangar. Rumor has it that it is a petrified troll ship.

Dyrholaey was yet another spot of natural wonders that lava flow creates, and time and tide forms. More black beaches, more volcanic cliffs and caves. We were were about to overdose.

And by the time we reached the waterfall Skogafoss we were actually worn out by all the sights. It didn't impress us much that this waterfall plunged down 60m on 25m width. It rained again but it didn't make a difference, because we were already wet from the fall's spray.

After a long day of travel we reached our final destination, another cute and cosy cottage somewhere in the middle of nowhere in the Ölfus region, not too far away from where our journey started. We were looking forward to spending another couple of days relaxing.

  1. Sonja, you have the knack for always being in the right place for the fog when it rolls in. Beautiful photos once again. Kind of wish I could sit on the red chair and just watch the water and the glaciers.

    1. Thanks, Karen. The chair was an interesting tidbit, very surrealistic in its volcanic surroundings.

  2. Really great photos! I really like the icebergs. Not something we would see on a regular basis. Most of the weather looks pretty overcast. Was it ever nice and sunny?

    1. Me too, Richard, that's why they are so many pics ;-)
The south is known to be more windy and rainy. On the other hand it was a bit warmer here than in the the other regions we traveled through.

  3. A veritable cornucopia of awesome panos, ice formations and pics of cloud-wreathed rock formations! What's the story on the red chair?

    1. Dom, I haven't found out the backstory on the chair. It's likely some kind of wicked Icelandic art.

  4. Mother nature puts on an incredible show in Iceland, that's for sure.
