We took the ferry from Rödby in Denmark to Puttgarden which was a fairly expensive but with forty-five minutes the shortest way to get back to the German mainland.
We did not know much about the third biggest island of Germany except for the fact that it was here where the final concert of Jimi Hendrix took place almost exactly 46 years ago.

The scenery wasn't much different from the Danish landscape, however the change in the atmosphere was palpable. At first we couldn't exactly put our finger on it but then we understood: We had left the happy zone. People around here seemed in a fairly bad mood, and although they obviously must have come here to spend their vacation on this island, folks seemed to be rather grumpy. Welcome back to Germany!
Willkommen in Deutschland!
A strong Easterly almost blew us off the bikes but lesson learned, we pedalled as fast and as relaxed as we could. By the way actual push bikes seemed to be the minority here, most cyclists we encountered were elderlies on E-bikes.
After spending two days on a really well equipped campground at the beach we left for the long journey back south into the Black Forest, and arrived back home after ten hours of driving time. We had a great time, and we are for sure going to miss the ocean, the sea breeze and the surf, and most of all the Danish happiness.

nice pics, moon shots are hit/miss for me....as to ferries, the one I took from AK back to WA was close to being a wash with costs of riding down....
ReplyDeleteDom, this was the only moon shot that worked out. My camera isn't really good enough for this.
DeleteWillkommen daheim!
DeleteWhat an adventure! Thank you for sharing it. I like ferries but given the choice, I'll almost always choose riding/driving.
ReplyDeleteRichard, I love ships, boats and everything floaty. So if there is an option to take a ferry... I will jump on it.
DeleteThat's the worst part of Key West. Drive ten hours and nothing's changed. Enjoy the cross German drive - you get to see things.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that somehow the same with most places in North America, Michael? Quick change in scenery is one of the advantages of living in the old world ;-)
DeleteGorgeous moon picture. Glad you made it home safe, even if the people were a little grumpy along the way.
ReplyDeleteWasn't Roland freezing in those cold waters? Brrrr.
Well, Brandy. I believe he suffered in silence ;-)
DeleteI miss the sea. I think Susan and I could use a little break in Ogunquit.
ReplyDeleteMaine, eh? Sounds great, David. Please make it so and bring back some nice fall foliage pics while at it.
DeleteOn another note, Roland became a Viking along the way. How else to explain the smile in what must have been ice-water.
ReplyDeleteThe Baltic Sea was still pretty warmed up from summer, plus... he lost a bet ;-)
:)
