Westweg Section 6: Heat Wave - Westweg Etappe 6: Hitzewelle

This section is going to be a short one, what's in a mere thirteen kilometres? Especially when the trail is mostly going downhill, right?

Our region is currently suffering under a heatwave. We haven't seen rain in a long while, trails are dusty, springs are dried up and fire hazard is high. As I begin this section hike in the early morning (it's Saturday, which means my morning starts 8 a.m.) at Brandenkopf, the temperature gauge is already pointing to 21°C. I am still a thru-hiker-in-training, so I carry a backpack loaded with all utensils for an overnighter along, although I am not planning on using any of it.

Silence in the forest, no wind in the trees, and I can hear the insects humming in the bushes. This is going to be a very hot day. Every step stirs up a cloud of dust. When the soil is bone dry, rocks and gravel come lose, and one better treads very carefully.

At 10 a.m. I arrive at the shelter Hohenlochen hut which was recently restored to former glory. There are tables and benches to rest and enjoy the spectacular view, a working freshwater source to replenish water supplies, a brand new camp shelter for an overnight stay, and an outhouse not too far away. Looks like hiker's paradise to me.

And bonus: During season the hut is serviced and operated by volunteers of the Black Forest hiking association on weekends, meaning: a mug of fresh ice cold spring water and freshly brewed coffee awaits. There's cake, too. And the best of all: it's free of charge. I am a member of said association and very much appreciate the continuous work its members are doing, so I leave a donation before continuing my trek. An extra worth mentioning is that this hut is not accessible by car. Supplies have to be transported here on foot, which makes this even more awesome. Thankfully the organisation is never short of volunteers. This water hole for sure is a treat for every hiker. Trail magic at its best.

A coffee with a view (and what a view that is)
Kaffee mit Ausblick (und was für einer)

I am no longer protected by the shadows of the trees. It's getting really hot now, and it's not even noon yet. A bit further I meet an elderly couple (together we are 164 years old, the man explained) out on a day hike. They seem all vital and happy, and sure didn't look their age. I'd like to be as spry as those two in my 80's (should I get to this age).

My next milestone is Spitzfelsen (pointy rock), and I am following the trail uphill for a change. This stretch is completely exposed, temperatures are beyond the 30°C mark. This isn't fun anymore. Again, there is a small refuge on the peak but I wouldn't want to be here during a thunder storm.

I take a quick selfie at the summit cross, and push on in order to find a shady spot. I get lucky, not far away there is a bench... with a view on the village of Hausach, which shall mark the end of this section.

Here comes the most difficult part: the path is going downhill in tight switchbacks, steeply sloping, and on loose gravel. I am glad to carry my trekking poles along because I would have gone down several times without them. The surface is treacherous, and grip is limited despite the good profile of my awesome boots.

The pictures don't do it justice, the slope is steep indeed, on a mere stretch of three kilometres I lose 300 meters in elevation.

And so I make my way down carefully slipping and sliding, when the inevitable finally happens. Just one tiny moment not paying attention to the trail has me twist my left ankle in the process. Darn, that hurts! But stopping is not an option on the last few clicks.

Finally I reach the valley, cross the river Kinzig by footbridge, and walk (limp) into town. The air is shimmering in the heat, the sun is burning a hole into my brain, and the pavement is cooking under my boots.

As usual I have my dear husband on standby for pickup service, I just have to text him the pickup coordinates, and he comes a-drivin'.

This section ends at the Westweg gate in Hausach, and while waiting for hubby to arrive I treat myself to ice tea and Orangina at the Chill Out pub and... chill.

Definitely not my kind of temperatures. Especially not, when on a hike. Heaven, please let it rain and cool down a bit, soon.

To my Canadian friends: Wishing you a wonderful 1st of July!

  1. Between all the day hikes will you be doing the entire trail? And is the Westweg part of a longer system? Some truly fantastic vistas!

    1. Hi Richard, the Westweg is one of several long distance trails in Germany, about 300 kms long, and divided into 10 to 12 sections depending on the route (there is an eastern and western leg further down south) and your daily mileage. It's also part of the European trail network E1 (https://e1.hiking-europe.eu/en/e1)

  2. Hiking in the heat is indeed not much fun....glorious views shown in the pics to be sure but still...hope the ankle isn't turned too badly.

As to having fresh coffee at a hiking stop....nice!

    1. Hi Dom, my ankle is already better today, some dressing did the trick. I just have to take it easy for a few days.

  3. An incredible system there of hiking amenities and so good that you not only belong but are utilizing and enjoying, even in the heat! I'm with you, those temperatures are not exertion temps for me any longer.

    Hope the ankle heals quickly!

  4. The heat is awful. Good on you for doing it anyway! The shelters look very nice, and what a treat to find refreshments, even cake! The woods even look dry. I do hope you get rain soon. Glad to hear that your ankle is okay.

    1. It was a fairly dry heat, Kathy but I am not good at higher temperatures. Low twenties (Celsius) are just as fine for me. Still no rain although the sky is covered in dark clouds today.
