Westweg Section 5: No Excuse, just do it! - Westweg Etappe 5: Keine Ausflüchte, machen!

I learn something new every day. This time I find out that I can walk. I mean, technically I know how to walk since my early childhood days. My mom always told me that as a toddler I leapfrogged the crawling-part and immediately tended to getting up and making use of my legs. You'd think that I must be a natural then alas, I have never been endowed with a good physical stamina and fitness to make something out of it.

I am still struggling with the limitations of my body. Despite all the hiking my fitness doesn't improve much further. Sometimes my right knee hurts (an old 'battle' injury), my calves cramp up after long uphill stretches (lack of minerals), my back feels like breaking (scoliosis), I have a flatfoot (right foot only), and I still get blisters on my pinky toes, no matter the choice of boots or socks or ointment. But this is the new me, nothing is going to stop me now! I am doing this against all odds.

The official stretch of the trail starts at Alexanderschanze and ends at Hark (17.1 km), but last time I left the trail at Zuflucht, and that's were I am about to re-enter this section, which adds another 3.5km to the trail. My finish line is at Brandenkopf, which makes for an extra 6.5km. My app will tell my that I will have clocked a bit over 30 kms by the end of the trip.

Roland, the world's best trail manager, gets up early on a Saturday morning in order to give me a ride to Zuflucht. It's an hour drive, and he leaves me at the trail head at 7:45 am. It's cold, only 8°C but I warm up quickly as I make my way through the forest. The surface of the single trail is soft and sandy. The air is crisp, and there's no noise to be heard, just the birds welcoming the day.

The abandoned hotel at Alexanderschanze looks like Bates' Motel. But there are plans of reviving the place and transform it into a ranger station.

Bates' Motel

There are plenty of single trails today, and elevation changes are few on this trek, so I am confident to make it without major issues.

One of several shelters is Hilda Hut, a perfect spot to camp out, if it weren't for the lack of water. I am aware that there wouldn't be any inn until I get to Hark, so I carry three litres of freshwater along.

Then I reach Lettstadt Hut, another nice place - but also without a fountain or spring.

At Glaswald lake view I am due for an early lunch break, get settled, fire up the gas stove and cook a quick veggie instant meal. Water supply meanwhile is down to one litre, soon I will need replenishment.

I am on my way towards Freiersberg Gate, one of the next section gates of the Westweg. On the long stretch downhill I come across the Julius fountain, which has fallen dry due to the lack of rain. Only a few drops are coming out of the tap, a refill would take hours, so I move on.

But to my surprise I find another fountain with fresh and cold water as I reach the gate. Water never has never been tasting better! At the fire pit I say hello to a young couple who had just started a campfire. I am wondering about their piles of provisions, and they tell me that they are going to have a big party with friends later the day. There is a huge selection of cold beverages on display, mouthwatering really, and I kindly ask them if I could buy one bottle of lemonade off them (it's my favourite regional pop). The girl shakes her head, and while rejecting my attempt of giving her a 5€ bill, she hands me two ice-cold lemonades... for free, she says smiling, and wishes me happy trails. I am touched, my faith in young people is restored. Needless to say that I empty the first bottle on site before continuing my trek, thankful for this encounter.

The path is getting more populated, lots of weekend warriors in form of mountain bikers flood the trail. For some reason it seems a guys only thing today. Most of them are nice and friendly, others are fairly reckless, their behaviour likely depending on their testosterone levels, and actually quite similar to a certain crowd of motorised two-wheelers.

I have Roland on stand-by but I know that I can make it from here, it's just another 6.5 km to go. However, it will be hard work, because the last stretch will be all uphill from here. At Kreuzsattel hut I empty the second bottle of lemonade in order to regain the strength and willpower to conquer the last steep leg up to Brandenkopf peak at almost 1,000m elevation. After thirty kilometres and seven hours I cross the invisible finish line. I made it. It's done (and I am done, too.)

Lessons learned:
1. Don't underestimate the karmic flow. Be nice to people.
2. Believe in trail magic. It really happens.
3. There is no excuse. You'll find out in the end it was worth the pain.

Was habe ich daraus gelernt?
1. Unterschätze nie die Wirkung Deines Karma. Sei nett zu den Leuten.
2. Glaube an die Magie des Weges. Es funktioniert.

  1. Awesome getting out there and hiking. Such a beautiful location for the hike too. I can see why you'd want to be out there all the time. We'd much rather go on a hike today than be looking at houses this afternoon. Nice to hear of young folks paying it forward too. Miss you!

    1. We are truly blessed with the area, especially when the weather plays along, Brandy. It has been dry for a while now and people are praying for rain... wells dry up and fire hazard is high. Miss you too. Good luck with the house hunting.

  2. And, tomorrow start planning the next hike. It’s addicting. The lack of potable water would have me considering some sort of filter system or is there no flowing water at all?

    1. I always carry a small sawyer filter, and would have filtered some flowing water, Richard, but I prefer it getting out of a tap of a fountain or out of the rocks, and not free flowing. You never know who or what died further up... but remember, I am no more than maybe 10 or 15 kilometres away from the next farm or village. Sometimes you have to take a detour to get to a freshwater source but it's never a real hazard.

  3. The young people you encountered are the real, bona fide "trail angels," people who bless hikers with random acts of kindness along the trail. Not one, but two bottles of lemonade, awesome. The ant hill is impressive, but your accomplishment is even more so! You are inspiring. And I also must say that I am enjoying seeing more of your face. Keep up with including the selfies, please. Stunning photos, too, as usual.

    1. I agree, Kathy, and it was completely unexpected, that's what trail magic is about ;-) Thank you, but inspiration and motivation was very much on hubby letting me to this thing, and providing me with the necessary logistics, he is a trail angel, too, you know...

  4. I forgot to mention the over-sized chairs. Maybe just another surprise bit of "art" to inspire people to stop for photos?

    1. The Black Forest scenery doesn't need enhancement, but that's what they do for tourists to stop, plus there is an inn waiting for customers nearby ;-)

  5. Congrats on completing the route! I like those oversized chairs....as to the kindness of complete strangers, it's nice when you encounter it and even better when you can "pay it forward", isn't it?

    1. Paying forward is rewarding, Dom. Not long ago I had helped out another hiker, and this encounter felt like payback in a good way.
