In the long run I gotta cheat eventually. - Auf lange Sicht komme ich nicht ohne Mogeln aus.

Day one on the Palatinate Forest Trail ended after 28 km, while day 2 and 3 sum up a total of 34 km. Yep, I cheated in order to be able to finish in the given time frame.

Am 1. Tag waren es 28 km auf dem Pfälzer Waldpfad, Tag 2 und 3 schlagen insgesamt mit 34 km zu Buche. Jawohl, ich habe etwas geschummelt, um die Strecke in der vorgegebenen Zeit schaffen zu können.

After a great breakfast at the hotel my ascent from Dahn leads me along the crest of various limestone formations. It has dried up, and the the weather couldn't be better. The trail follows the shape of the topographic landscape, and so it goes up and down and up again. By the end of the day I will have conquered the equivalent of 174 floors.

Nach einem tollen Frühstück im Hotel mache ich mich auf den Weg. Es geht bergauf und lange auf dem Felsgrat endlang. Der Weg folgt den topografischen Gegebenheiten der Landschaft. Immer wieder geht es auf und ab. Am Ende des Tage werde ich das Equivalent von 174 Stockwerken erklommen haben.

There is a little chapel in the middle of nowhere, just a footpath is leading here. And even better, not far away the waterhole, a hiker refuge where simple meals and beverages are being served.

Mitten im Nirgendwo treffe ich auf eine Kapelle. Nur der Fußweg führt hierhin. Was aber viel besser ist, in der Nähe gibt es ein geöffnetes Wanderheim, wo einfaches Essen und Getränke auf mich warten.

After two spritzers and a cake I move on. By the time I arrive at my destination for the day, the clouds have once again won the weather game.

Nach zwei Roséweinschorlen bin ich fit für den Rest der Strecke. Als ich schließlich am Hotel ankomme, haben die Wolken mal wieder die Überhand gewonnen.

... a free ride to the next train station once I had found out, that the next section at almost 40 km (25 mls) isn't doable this time of the year due to lack of necessary daylight.

... ein kostenloser Bringdienst zum Bahnhof, als ich feststelle, dass ich die fast 40 km lange Etappe nicht mit dem mir zur Verfügung stehenden Tageslicht würde meistern können.

So, I take the train to scrub off 15 km of the distance, which leaves me a bit stranded, and far away from the original hiking trail. I have no other option but to follow the bike trail, which isn't too bad at all. I am making excellent progress while walking on pavement and gravel.

Mit dem Zug erspare ich mir etwa 15 km der Distanz, bin nun aber weit weg vom eigentlichen Wanderweg. Es bleibt mir nichts anderes übrig, als eine Weile dem Fahrradweg zu folgen. Das ist aber gar nicht so übel, denn auf Asphalt und Schotter komme ich richtig gut voran.

Near the town of Rodalben I join the original trail once again, where the Palatinate forest trail meets the regional Rodalben rock trail.

In der Nähe von Rodalben erreiche ich dann wieder den Pfälzer Waldweg, welcher sich dort mit dem Rodalber Felsenpfad vereinigt.

Home of the fire salamander, its in stasis though, it was too cold for the critter.

Offensichtlich wohnt hier auch der Feuersalamander. Allerdings scheint er noch in Kältestarre zu verweilen.

View on the city of Rodalben, my next road stop. The inn downtown is very basic, but clean. The day's menu consist of one sole dish (potato salad and sausage), however, the rosé wine is alright and keeps me in a good mood  ;-)

Blick auf Rodalben, wo ich meine nächste Nacht verbringen werde. Der Gasthof ist sehr einfach, aber sauber. Zum Abendessen gibt es genau ein Tagesgericht bestehend aus Kartoffelsalat und Bratwurst, aber der Roséwein ist ok und hält mich bei guter Laune  ;-)
