For a long time I took privileges for granted, the advantage to be able to grow up, live and thrive in liberated post-war Western Germany with a fairly decent social net and a pretty good medical system thanks to the tax payers' contribution. My family was far from rich but living was affordable with two parents working, and even after my genitor bailing on us, we still got by ok. Free education, a paid apprenticeship and hard work helped turning us into now contributing members to the society. Yet I thought the grass always to be greener on the other side, that paying less taxes a.k.a. more personal and financial freedom was the way to go. 

Vielzu lange habe ich es für selbstverständlich hingenommen, im befreiten Nachkriegs-Westdeutschland mit seinem steuerfinanzierten zuverlässigen Sozialsystem und guter medizinischer Versorgung aufzuwachsen. Meine Familie war nicht reich, aber wir konnten uns das Notwendige leisten, da beide Elternteile gearbeitet hatten. Auch nachdem sich mein Erzeuger seiner Verantwortung entzogen hatte, kamen wir zurecht. Kostenlose Schul- und bezahlte Ausbildung zusammen mit harter Arbeit machten sich bezahlt, und so wurden aus uns seither steuerzahlende Mitglieder der Gesellschaft. Trotzdem glaubte ich lange, dass das Gras auf der anderen Seite grüner wäre, dass weniger Steuern und die persönliche und finanzielle Freiheit das ultimative Ziel sein sollten.
 

Meanwhile I beg to differ, because in times like these I can actually appreciate the advantages of our tax supported social system and watch our tax moneys at work: financial support for small businesses to large companies, short time compensation for workers in order to keep them employed and insured, unemployment benefits for those out of work and bonuses for the many people working jobs essential to the crisis.

Mittlerweile sehe ich das anders, denn in Zeiten, wie wir sie nun haben, sieht man endlich die Vorteile unseres Systems und kann miterleben, dass unsere Steuern durchaus sinnvoll eingesetzt werden: Es gibt Finanzhilfen für Klein- und Großunternehmen, Kurzarbeitergeld, Arbeitslosenhilfe und Boni für Arbeitende in systemkritischen Berufen.
 

However, as reliable as our system may seem, the pandemic has painfully pointed out its flaws and vulnerability: first and foremost the lack of the offshore produced and desperately needed protection gear in times of great needs such as face masks and hospital gowns but also meds and disinfectants. I trust that supply chains for critical goods will be revised, and I hope that our world will get a bit less globalized. I also want to believe that the social awareness of the 70s and 80s of the last century (then called the eco-social market economy) will arise again and put people over profit for a change. Well, one can dream.... 

Doch so verlässlich unser Sozialsystem scheinen mag, die Pandemie hat uns aber auch seine Verletzlichkeit und Fehler aufgezeigt: Wichtige Produkte wie Schutzmasken und -Kleidung, Medikamente und Desinfektionsmittel werden in Fernost produziert und fehlten nun plötzlich, als die Lieferketten einbrachen. Ich vertraue darauf, dass dieses Konzept überarbeitet und die Globalisierung diesbezüglich mal zurückgeschraubt wird. Auch wünsche ich mir, dass das Prinzip der sozialen Marktwirtschaft der 70er und 80er Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts auferstehen, und der Mensch wieder wichtiger als der Profit wird. Der Glaube stirbt ja bekanntlicherweise zuletzt...
 

As of recently it looks like the spread of the virus has been contained and come May our government will take baby steps into opening up the country again. We'll see... 

Inzwischen sieht es so aus, als wenn die Ausbreitung des Virus eingedämmt werden konnte, ab Mai werden wir die ersten Lockerungen der uns von der Regierung auferlegten restiktiven Maßnahmen sehen. Schau'n mer mal...
