Just like this it's Autumn - Und plötzlich ist Herbst.

Days are getting shorter, and we are seeing more cloudy days. Mother Nature is looking forward to getting watered. Leaves are falling, and fall foliage is on albeit not as spectacular as in the north westerly part of the USA or Canada but pretty all the same.

On my recent walks around town I discovered not only the colour change but also the rich bounty of berries. Every season has its beauty.

A reward for a 10k walk around the block was seasonal lunch: Pumpkin carrot cream soup.

  1. The soup sounds delicious. I will be searching for a recipe. Are all those berries edible?

    1. Most of the red ones aren't edible, Richard. In fact some of them would be messing with your digestive system, not toxic per say but certainly inedible.

  2. Watch out Sonja, where there are a lot of berries, there are bound to be hungry fat bears :)

    1. Oh yes, it's very dangerous to linger around, many bears here, huge and beautiful bears, the best bears in the whole... no wait... wrong country ;-)

  3. All the pretty berries! On my walk today I noticed some white berries along the roadside ditch. I didn’t get a pic, but they were pretty. Alas I don’t know what they are.

I love your photo with the purple flowers and fall foliage. They really stand out. Seems like all our flowers are done for the year.

    1. My mom told me the white ones are called "Knallerbse" literally translated "pop pea" because of the noise they make when squishing them. Common snowberry is what they might be called in the English speaking world.

    2. Ist das so ein Knallerbsen-Strauch am Maschendrahtzaun? ;-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxwXozLR2IA

  4. welch fantastische Herbstfotos!

  5. Very beautiful pics, Sonja! On a hike last weekend I also came by some pretty fall foliage - on poison oak. Yeah, pretty for sure, but better to be observed from a safe distance! ;-)

    1. Thanks, Dom. Some of them might be edible when cooked, some are without the pit, but I wasn't keen on trying.

  7. Just lovely Sonja! Are the black berries called elderberry? That triggered memories from my childhood in the UK. My grandma used to make wine in big stone flagons. She used the elderberry flowers in spring to make a sparkling white wine and the berries in fall to make a red wine. I was allowed to have a small glass of both!

    1. That's what my mom and I guessed, too. Elderberry wine? Never heard of such, my mom would make syrup out of it. A friend of mine makes liqueur. Seems a very versatile fruit.
