Founding and Early History:
Disibodenberg Abbey was founded around the 7th century by St. Disibod, an Irish missionary and monk. Disibod is believed to have come to the region to spread Christianity, and the monastery became an important center of Christian faith and culture in the area. The name "Disibodenberg" is derived from the saint's name, and "Bodenberg" refers to the mountain or hill on which the abbey was built. Over the centuries, Disibodenberg evolved from a simple monastic settlement into a larger Benedictine abbey. The site attracted numerous monks and pilgrims, and the monastery played a central role in the religious and cultural life of the region.
Hildegard von Bingen's Connection:
Disibodenberg Abbey is particularly famous as the place where Hildegard von Bingen spent much of her early life. She entered the monastery at the age of 8, around 1106, and lived there for 30 years. Initially, she was placed under the guidance of the abbess Jutta of Sponheim, who became her mentor. Hildegard experienced her first mystical visions while at Disibodenberg, which would later form the basis for her theological writings. The monastery played a pivotal role in her spiritual development, and it was here that she began to emerge as a spiritual leader. In 1136, Hildegard became the abbess of the monastery, and under her leadership, the community grew. Hildegard’s visions and writings gained widespread attention during her time at Disibodenberg.
My hike lead me from Bad Sobernheim to Staudernheim and uphill to Disibodenberg were I spent two hours walking amongst the ruins. In Odernheim I find an open bakery, and the next village Duchroth comes with a food dispenser machine. Uphill, downhill, repeat, another village, called Oberhausen. If it hadn't been for the villages lined up like a string of pearls it would have been vineyards and barren fields all day long.
After conquest of the final hill today involving a village called Schlossböckelheim, I finally arrived at Waldböckelheim. At the hotel a hot shower and a good meal awaited the tired and exhausted hikeress.

LG SonjaM
