About best-laid Plans

This year our adopted homeland Canada celebrates it's 150th Birthday, and we had intended to be there for the party, alas, due to some ongoing health related issues on my side our original travel plans fell through.

Now, what to do with ten days of employer approved vacation days? We had no backup plan... until my better half suggested going on another road trip in a camper van. Due to last year's lovely experience we instantly sent an inquiry to the same rental company, but on this short notice our options were rather limited.

That's why we finally signed up for a Fiat chassis based 6,5m x 2,3m x 2,8m Pilote P656GJ Legendary RV, which we found to be a fairly huge vehicle going by European standards and road conditions.

The van came with two single beds (one big enough for the man), a full kitchen and bathroom with a shower, a seating area for five, and plenty of storage room and closets for our stuff and provisions.

Alright now, we got the wheels, but yet no clue where to go. We could head for north like we did last year, or go west, and visit the Atlantic ocean, travel south to the Mediterranean Sea, or explore the "wild" East. But every horizontal direction came with a caveat: the summer heat, which these days I have limited tolerance for. So the best option available seemed to be... moving upwards, for example into the Swiss mountains.

We checked the weather report which promised a mixed bag of weather with temperatures in the low twenties, and decided to make our neighbouring country Switzerland our vacation destination. With this in mind we made a quick call to the rental company to have the camper van ready for pick-up at the Swiss border, instead of Karlsruhe, but alas it seemed too late (or their flexibility limited) for a change. Ok, then Karlsruhe (a hundred kilometre drive in the opposite direction) it was.

On a fair Saturday morning we arrived on time at the rental station and... no vehicle for us. We were told that it was noted for pick-up in Lörrach (at the Swiss border, which we were told wasn't possible...). Communication obviously wasn't their strong suit, eh? Anyway, we weren't ready to leave without an RV, so they offered us a brand new vehicle, which had just arrived on site, it had a mere twenty clicks on its odometer, even the mattresses and equipment were still coated in plastic.

The staff did a quick technical checkup, removed the wrappings, filled the propane tank, as well as the fuel tank, and the water reservoir, and after a mere hour delay we were finally good to go!

Our equipment

After an uneventful two hour ride on the German highway we stopped at the border in order to pick up the mandatory vehicle permit - the Swiss motorway vignette - then it was another two hours until arriving at our first destination: the Campground Jungfrau in Lauterbrunnen, in the valley of many waterfalls. After check-in we were allowed to freely pick and chose our spot. We found one directly located on the river banks, with the Staubbach falls as a backdrop. Now it was time to move in and set up our new temporary home.

The Sound of a Rainbow

Last Friday it had been raining cats and dogs all afternoon, and I was prepared to stay at home for the rest of the day. No puttering around on Bella, the red 2008 Vespa GTS250.

I had just made myself comfortable on the sofa, a glas of regional bubbly and a good read in front of me when I noticed a very peculiar light shining through the windows. It was of celestial colour, a soft tone of yellow and orange, but it was too early for sunset.

While it was pouring still, some sneaky sun rays had found their way through an opening in the wall of clouds and were about to perform a spectacular light show.

I jumped off the sofa, donned minimum gear (helmet and gloves really), and hopped on the Vespa in order to hunt down and capture this natural phenomenon.

And there it was, right in front of me, a double arch rainbow in all its glory. And... no camera. In the heat of the moment I had forgotten to check whether it was still tucked away in the glove compartment where I usually left it...

The iPhone snapshots can't really do it justice. The lighting was way more spectacular and colourful. In this very moment of glory the rain stopped, and there was silence. No wind, no birds, no traffic noise. It was as if the world had paused and held its breath upon this beautiful sight. The slightest ethereal sound in the air. And I swear I heard the rainbow sing. (Then again, maybe it was plainly my tinnitus chirping...)

I was soaked through, and I might have caught the sniffles but it was well worth putting up with the elements in order to bear witness of such a precious appearance presented by Mother Nature. Rainbows are just happening too rare hence, must not be ignored.
