The Kinzig valley is very popular with the pedal bike crowd. People actually spend their vacation in this part of Germany for the sole purpose of riding bicycles. I get that now, or I am about to.
The area offers a widespread network of cycle trails, and you barely have to use public roads at all. Hence, it is very safe to travel. And bonus, my Townie is allowed to go, where my motorised two-wheelers can't go.
For example: Riding on the flood control dyke along the river Kinzig. The river looks quite harmless now. We haven't had a lot of rain lately and due to lack of melt water from the mountains the water levels are unusually low. But I have seen pictures of another time when a raging torrent went through the valley leaving a scene of destruction.
This time of the day (it was well after 5 p.m.) I had the cycle path and surrounding scenery almost to myself. The air was still warm from this lovely spring day, and I found a nice spot on a rock to watch the water rushing by.
On my way home I meandered through the farmland. I am amazed how green everything is already. Spring is in full force, and we didn't even have a half decent winter yet.
I stopped at an old weir that is no longer in use. It's quite rusty. In typical German friendliness (VERBOTEN!) a warning sign suggests, that it is not safe to cross the runway.
I have watched kids playing here before, ignoring the sign, because that's what kids do all the time, and getting hurt in the process is part of growing up, right? And I, myself have the wonderful excuse to have lived too long in a free country, because I climbed up there as well, and with the bike. (Neither Townie nor SonjaM were harmed in the making of this photo.)
