The Odd Couple goes to Switzerland (by way of France)

Roland had stuffed his belongings into Bella, his Vespa GTS 250, within seconds while I needed to fumble around a bit to secure my luggage on Rover, my Sportster, since the bike doesn't have a luggage rack (and will not get one any time soon). But with some elastic straps the problem had been quickly solved.

And High Noon, on Friday the 1st of August we departed for our long weekend road trip to Switzerland by way of France. The weather gods were with us and we got best riding weather: sun and blue skies with a lovely 26C.

We rode along the vineyards of Kaiserstuhl (Germany) towards Colmar (France). In a small town (forgot to write down the name) we had late lunch (salad and quiche), and stopped again for coffee and pastry at a small gas station turned bakery (not one of Sonja's brightest idea though, as it wasn't Gluten-free and she suffered a bit later...).

After 215km and 4 1/2 hours of saddle time meandering on backroads we called it a day in Pont de Roide at a bargain price of 55 EUR, and bonus we even got a secure parking spot in the back of the hotel. We freshened up, did some grocery shopping for dinner, and had a beer in the hotel. The remainder of the evening we spent slowly killing a bottle of wine while watching people and traffic go by.

    1. Dom, I was thinking of you when we took a picture of the old photograph. You know that I also love those then and now shots.

  3. Wonderful. All except the gluten free incident.

Is that river running high or is the level always so high and the current so exhuberant?

    1. Sometimes I try and get lucky. This time taught me otherwise...

Well spotted, David, the water levels are indeed unusually high given the time of the year. We had a very rainy July (likely the rainiest in weather history books), and many regions still suffer damage from flooding.

  4. Have you considered spraying Rover orange? I think some of the past colour is lacking in this odd couple mixed machine type trip?

  5. Sonja:

nice weather. I don't know how you find roads with such little traffic.

I like how you can travel such short distances and get to another Country. 215kms can't even get you to Seattle. and sometimes it takes 3 hours to get through the Border, especially on a long holiday weekend like last weekend. Even Nexus was an hour

I was also comparing the before and after

    bob: riding the wet coast
