Happiness is... the wind in your face

At the North Sea, a marginal sea of the Atlantic ocean, the coast is still wild and untamed. That's what I really like with the western seaside of Denmark. The wind is mostly a westerly, sometimes it comes with a gentle touch, and sometimes it's a furious gale. We got some of the latter, the air was moist with ocean spray, and we could taste the salty breeze on our lips. I could watch and listen to the waves crashing against the beach for hours, but we had some cycling business to do.

I have to admit that - given my not so optimal shape and condition - I was pretty upset with myself when I found out how difficult pedal biking against the westerly was, despite the fact that our surroundings were basically no-hill-land. In addition the wind seemed to be mocking me by constantly blowing sand in my face. Sand, that would get stuck in my hair, between my teeth, in my clothing and my shoes even. The wind also shoved some of the stuff on the otherwise nicely paved bicycle path for good measure, to make moving forward even more difficult. Cursing under my breath I grabbed my handlebar, ducked under the gale and pedalled hard but to no avail. Not too long I was about ready to bury my trusty pedal horse somewhere in the dunes and leave it there to rot when an epiphany dawned on me...

"If you surrender to the wind, you can ride it." Toni Morrison

So, I put my ambitions aside for now and forever, and abandoned my high hopes of circling the hundred kilometres long Ringköbing Fjord loop in one day. I quitted recording my efforts in mileage and hours. And I surrendered to the wind, put my bike in lower gear and just rode, slowly but steadily, moving at the pace the head wind would allow. No records were broken that day, but I got my workout nevertheless, and the huge mountain of pasta combined with a glass of red wine at dinner was well deserved. At the end of the day I found myself laughing at the wind.

  2. All you can do is laugh at the wind and occasionally shout to the heavens "is that all you got?"

    1. I had thought about it, Brandy but I didn't want to provoke said heavens to maybe throw a tornado at me ;-)

  4. Cycling along the beach is something that I still miss. The wind, salty spray and sand is part of the experience that's missed without a good breeze.

    1. Agreed, Richard. And I like a good wave action which wouldn't have been possible without the wind...

  5. Ah, the wind and the waves! Sounds like you conquered it all nicely with beautiful pictures to prove it.
