The green caldron
The Caldeirão Verde (green caldron) in combination with the Caldeirão do Inferno (hell caldron) is probably one of the finest but also one of the most popular Levada walks. In order to beat the crowds we rose up early, and found the parking lot at the madre (trail head) still empty on our arrival at 9 a.m. Another German couple, identifiable by their Jack Wolfskin branded outfit obviously had the same idea. Germans... stereotypical in oh so many aspects (yes, we also do wear their apparel, it's good stuff).
The walk starts at 900m elevation at Queamadas park, and while strolling down the well maintained trail the scenery looks very much like the proverbial Garden of Eden. Now we get it why Madeira is also called the flower island (and if my mom had been accompanying us, she would have started identifying the species immediately).
Sunbathing critters, they are indeed the same species, but different colours.
Like everywhere else, sign posts make sure to keep the hiker on the right track.
After a short while we met the levada burbling along, and the route started to become more... interesting. We were not in Eden anymore, but had dived into a jungle of native trees and shrubs. Due to last night's rainfall we were surrounded by water, dripping, flowing, sprinkling everywhere, which made for a slippery slope and muddy trails, so we had to be treading carefully.
The main waterfall was such a pretty (albeit sightly soggy) sight.
Overall the trail was well secured and maintained, but it didn't prevent one specific male to keep stumbling over uneven surface, or to keep finding branches and bumps (tunnel ahead!) to run into. If cursing and swearing would actually have been considered an art, my poor hubby would be its master. And on top of it, he managed to lose footing, and almost fell into the basin by the fall. Luckily he only fell down a meter or so, and landed on a ledge. Thankfully he didn't hurt himself much but him slipping and sliding, and me having to watch him helplessly was a bit of a shock for the both of us, it all happened too fast! So we made sure to be even more alert while continuing our trek.
Yes, that's where we are headed. - Hier geht's lang!
Yet another shower - schon wieder eine Dusche
Looking back - zurück blickend
After eight kilometres we arrived at our turning point. The levada would continue but the walk got strenuous and the man was hungry. So, as usual, we had a rest and a picnic halfway, before going back without further incidents, besides letting other hikers pass in tight spaces.
The hike summed up to almost 18km, and an elevation gain of 53 floors. By the end of the day we surely felt the activity in our bones and muscles.
Yep. Breathtaking again. And some in the suck in the air, grab the rail, and don't look down! Those are some sheer drop offs! I'm glad you and Roland were safe in all the right places.
ReplyDeleteAnd it is a testament to you that you worried about hubby's safety and didn't get a pic of the slip. hehehe
Who said I didn't get a pic? No seriously, I was worried too much at that moment, and he would have never forgiven me...
DeleteRespekt! Oh Mann, ey!
ReplyDeleteIch weiß, was Du meinst, Irina.
Deleteit surely is a hikers paradise. Lush beautiful views and gorgeous flowers. Great job on the pics. Glad Roland didn't hurt himself in his stumble. How many languages can he curse in? Might come in handy on those hikes to use more than one.
ReplyDeleteFunny you should ask, Brandy, he fluently speaks curse in English and German.
DeleteGreen Cauldron, cool name. Maybe Roland needs grippier shoes? :)
ReplyDeleteIn his defense, I'll say colorful swearing can be an art form in the right place.
The boots were ok, it was a user error, Dom.
DeleteBreathtaking! What lovely pictures and a beautiful place to hike!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dar. It's not the we(s)t coast but still lovely.
DeleteThat house in the first photo looks totally out of place on a sub-tropical island and not very Portuguese. Looks almost Bavarian or even old English cottage from that distance.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous flower photos. That first blue one, the Agapanthus, is regarded as a pest in our area of NZ because it spreads quickly and is hard to kill!
I agree, Geoff, but we have been told that it is of traditional built, especially the thatched roof is typical for Madeira.
DeleteYou know your flowers... I didn't know that they are considered a pest.
I love all those waterfalls and the flower pictures. We still have below 0C/32F at night.
