As our muscles were still sore from the day before, we went exploring the island by means of wheels. Madeira is of volcanic origin, so we went looking for volcanoes. But they were nowhere to be seen. That's when we found out that we were pretty much sitting right on top of it. The whole island consists of a huge shield volcano, rising 4000m from the bottom of the ocean plus another 1862m above sea level, up to the mountain peak of Pico Ruivo. The island lost it's typical shape over eons due to erosion which carved the geological reliefs we see today.

Unsere Muskeln schmerzten immer noch vor Vortag, also ging es an diesem Tag auf vier Rädern um die Insel. Madeira ist vulkanischen Ursprungs, also wollten wir Vulkane finden, aber haben nirgendwo welche entdecken können. So fanden wir heraus, dass die ganze Insel ein riesiger Schildvulkan war, der 4000m vom Ozeanboden aufsteigt und dann noch einmal 1862m bis zum Gipfel des Pico Ruivo hoch ist. Über die Jahrmillionen verschwand die typische Form durch Erosion und formte das geologische Relief, welches wir heute sehen.

The steep winding narrow roads require some half decent driving skills as well as a powerful vehicle. Many tourists underestimate the twists and bends in the road and rent underpowered cars. They are the most dangerous species on the road, because you often find them driving in the middle of the lane at low speed. Now add a truck or a bus to the scenario and you get a recipe for disaster. Thankfully tourists remained a minority in the north.

Die steilen, gewundenen und engen Straßen erfordern sowohl eine gewisse Fahrpraxis, als auch ein PS starkes Fahrzeug. Viele Touristen unterschätzen die Serpentinen und Steigungen und mieten sich untermotorisierte Autos. Diese sind dann besonders gefährlich, denn sie fahren nicht nur mittig der Straße, sondern kriechen auch noch daher. Kommt dann noch ein Bus oder LKW ins Spiel, kann es schnell eng werden. Aber dankenswerterweise kommen nicht allzu viele Touristen in den Norden.

In den Bergen wechselt das Wetter häufig und schnell. Und hier fanden wir eine andere Lebensform: sehr kräftig und gesund aussehendes... Berg-Viehzeug.

Pico do Arieero

The last leg of our day trip brought us to the east coast. The climate here is dryer and warmer, and vegetation is sparse. From here on we continued back to Ponta Delgada by way of the Continente Supermarket in Santana. The whole trip summed up to under 200km (125 ms), and our walking score remained under 10km. But that was ok, too, after all we were on vacation.

Inzwischen waren wir fast ganz um die Insel herum und an der Ostküste angekommen. Hier war es trockener und wärmer, auch die Vegetation hatte nachgelassen. Von hier aus ging es dann, mit einem Umweg über den Supermarkt Continente in Santana, zurück nach Ponta Delgada. Insgesamt waren es keine 200km, die Wanderstrecke war heute mit nicht mal 10km kaum erwähnenswert. Aber das musste auch mal sein. Schließlich waren wir ja in Urlaub.
