The Sound of a Rainbow

Last Friday it had been raining cats and dogs all afternoon, and I was prepared to stay at home for the rest of the day. No puttering around on Bella, the red 2008 Vespa GTS250.

Letzten Freitag hat es pünktlich zum Wochenende aus Kübeln geschüttet und ich bereitete mich mental darauf vor, den Rest des Tages zuhause zu verbringen. Kein Herumgurken auf Bella, der roten 2008 Vespa GTS250.

I had just made myself comfortable on the sofa, a glas of regional bubbly and a good read in front of me when I noticed a very peculiar light shining through the windows. It was of celestial colour, a soft tone of yellow and orange, but it was too early for sunset.

Ich hatte mir es also gerade mit einem Gespritzten und einem guten Buch auf dem Sofa gemütlich gemacht, als ich ein sonderbares Licht von draußen wahrnahm. Es wirkte fast überirdisch, ein sanfter orange gelber Ton, aber für den Sonnenuntergang war es noch zu früh.


While it was pouring still, some sneaky sun rays had found their way through an opening in the wall of clouds and were about to perform a spectacular light show.

Obwohl immer noch in Strömen regnete, hatten einige Sonnenstrahlen durch die Wolkenberge gefunden und veranstalteten eine großartige Lichtershow.

I jumped off the sofa, donned minimum gear (helmet and gloves really), and hopped on the Vespa in order to hunt down and capture this natural phenomenon.

Also sprang ich auf, warf mir kurz was über (eigentlich nur Helm und Handschuhe) und sattelte flugs den Roller, mit dem Plan, das Naturphänomen zu jagen und einzufangen. 

And there it was, right in front of me, a double arch rainbow in all its glory. And... no camera. In the heat of the moment I had forgotten to check whether it was still tucked away in the glove compartment where I usually left it...

Und da war er, direkt vor mir ein wunderschöner doppelter Regenbogen und... wo war meine Kamera? Normalerweise steckte sie doch immer im Handschuhfach... in der Hitze des Gefechts hatte ich leider vergessen nachzuschauen, ob sie wirklich noch da lag.

The iPhone snapshots can't really do it justice. The lighting was way more spectacular and colourful. In this very moment of glory the rain stopped, and there was silence. No wind, no birds, no traffic noise. It was as if the world had paused and held its breath upon this beautiful sight. The slightest ethereal sound in the air. And I swear I heard the rainbow sing. (Then again, maybe it was plainly my tinnitus chirping...)

Die iPhone Schnappschüsse können das Farbenspiel nicht wirklich 'rüberbringen. Das Licht war so viel brillanter, die Farben intensiver. In dem Moment hörte der Regen auf und es wurde total still. Es ging kein Lüftchen, es gab kein Vogelzwitschern und auch keinen Verkehrslärm. Es war, als wenn die Welt einen Moment den Atem angehalten hätte. Dann ein ganz zartes Geräusch, wie ein Zirpen. Ich schwöre, ich habe den Regenbogen singen gehört. (Aber vielleicht war es ja auch nur mein Tinnitus...)

I was soaked through, and I might have caught the sniffles but it was well worth putting up with the elements in order to bear witness of such a precious appearance presented by Mother Nature. Rainbows are just happening too rare hence, must not be ignored. 

Ich war pitschnass und habe mir möglicherweise einen Schnupfen weggeholt, aber das war es mir wert. Regenbogen gibt es selten genug und und wenn man schon einmal so ein wunderbares Geschenk von Mutter Natur erhält, dann sollte man es auch annehmen.
