Seelenfrieden

It means 'peace of the soul', and this is what I found while hiking up the Verzasca Valley in Switzerland.

Wenn es so etwas wie Seelenfrieden gibt, dann habe ich ihn beim Wandern im Verzasca Tal in der Schweiz gefunden.

The next leg of this trip was short but lead over small and curvy roads. Not for the faint of the heart especially when at the wheel of a huge vehicle. We broke camp in the morning and arrived on the next pitch in Sonogno, a tiny village located at the end of the valley in time for a quick lunch break.

Der nächste Reiseabschnitt war zwar kurz, führte aber über enge und kurvige Straßen. Es brauchte Nerven aus Stahl, um die weiße Ware (unser WoMo) zu sicher dort hindurch zu steuern. Am nächsten Morgen packten wir also ein und schlugen bereits weniger als zwei Stunden später unser neues Camp in Sonogno, einem Dörfchen am oberen Ende des Tals auf, wo wir erst einmal eine Mittagspause einlegten.

There is no official campground in the village at the end of the valley but for a small fee overnight stays are allowed. Thankfully not many know or make use of this opportunity, hence we got a perfect spot for the night, close to a creek.

Es gibt zwar keinen offiziellen Campingplatz im Dorf am Ende des Tals, aber für eine kleine Gebühr darf man dort über Nacht stehen. Davon machen erfreulich wenige Gebrauch, so dass wir einen 1A Platz an einem Bach ergattern konnten.

Valle Verzasca is located on the north end of Lago Maggiore. The picturesque valley stretches out about 25 km (15 mi.) in north-south direction over an elevation from 500 to approx. 900 meters. On its south end the gorge narrows like a bottleneck, where the river is tamed by a reservoir - Lago di Vogorno.

Das Valle Verzasca befindet sich am Nordende des Lago Maggiore. Das pittoreske Tal erstreckt sich etwa 25 km in nord-südlicher Richtung und überwindet dabei eine Höhe von 500 auf 900 Meter. Im Süden bildet die Schlucht einen Flaschenhals, an dem man einen Staudamm errichtet hat und so den Verzasca Fluss gezähmt hat. Der Stausee Lago di Vogorno.

As you may imagine, my plan was to hike along the valley from beginning to end. Most hikers start on top and work their way down, I had the opposite direction in mind. My better half bravely tagged along.

Ihr könnt Euch vielleicht vorstellen, was ich vorhatte. Ich wollte das Tal von Anfang bis Ende durchlaufen. Die meisten starten dabei am oberen Talende, ich wollte es aber von unten her angehen. Und meine bessere Hälfte schloss sich diesem Plan ganz tapfer an.

We prepared ourselves for the long walk, gathered food and beverages, and took the regular bus back down into the valley. It was Sunday noon and many day trippers populated the area, especially at natural rock pools near the famous pedestrian stone bridge Ponte dei Salti (bridge of jumping) in Lavertezzo.

Wir rüsteten uns entsprechend für die lange Wanderung und packten Proviant und Getränke ein. Dann nahmen wir den regulären Bus zurück ins Tal. Es war Sonntag Nachmittag und viele Tagesausflügler nutzten das gute Wetter, um in den natürlichen Steinbecken in Lavertezzo, in der Nähe der berühmten Fußgängerbrücke aus Stein, der Ponte die Salti (Spring-Brücke) zu baden.

Mile after mile the trail got wilder. We passed a couple of hikers, and were again overtaken by them when stopping for photos but over long periods we had this gorgeous scenery all to ourselves.

Mit jedem Schritt wurde der Weg ursprünglicher. Am Anfang überholten wir immer mal wieder ein paar Wanderer, die uns dann wieder einholten, wenn wir gerade dabei waren Fotos zu machen, aber meistens hatten wir diese traumhafte Landschaft ganz für uns alleine.

Every once in a while we came across abandoned farmhouses. I imagine that life must have been hard in this remote valley back in the days.

Immer wieder kommen wir an verlassenen Bauernhäusern vorbei. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass das Leben seinerzeit in diesem abgeschiedenen Tal nicht einfach war.

A dragon! - Ein Drache!

During holiday season some old rustici are being revived serving as watering holes. Usually bread, cheese and sausage is served in the grotto (local lingo for tavern).

Während der Ferienzeit werden manche der alten Rustici wiederbelebt. Normalerweise wird in so einer Grotto (Tessiner Begriff für Taverne) Brot, Käse und Wurst mit Getränken angeboten.

As we were gaining elevation the vegetation started to change. Occasionally we stopped to refresh our hard working feet, and dipped them into the ice-cold water. What a nice treat.

Als wir in höhere Lagen kamen veränderte sich so langsam die Vegetation. Wir machten immer mal wieder Pause, um unsere hart arbeitenden Füße in eiskaltes Wasser zu tauchen. Das tat gut.

I was almost disappointed when the hike came to an end, when we finally arrived back in Sonogno in the late afternoon. I felt as if I could have gone on forever and a day. I neither felt tired nor exhausted, but rather strangely exhilarated, certainly fuelled by the accomplishment of walking a longer distance, and thankful that my body, although pushed over the limits, didn't fail me. It was a notion I was going to cherish for the rest of this journey, and I am still holding on to long after returning to work.

Als wir am späten Nachmittag wieder in Sonogno eintrafen, war ich fast enttäuscht, dass die Wanderung zu Ende war. Ich hätte ewig so weiter gehen können und fühlte mich weder müde noch erschöpft, sondern war von einem eigenartigen Hochgefühl erfüllt. Das kam bestimmt zum einen von der Freude darüber, dass wir diese lange Strecke bergauf erwandert hatten, aber auch von der Dankbarkeit, dass mich mein Körper, obwohl an seinen Grenzen, nicht im Stich gelassen hat, ein Gefühl, welches mich den Rest der Reise begleiten sollte, und welches ich auch lange nach der Rückkehr zum Arbeitsplatz immer noch in mir trage.
