Some of you might have heard of the Portland, Oregon based NBC TV show Grimm, in which the main character, a descendant from the Grimm's (as in 'fairy tales'), has to guard the balance between humanity and mythological creatures. I knew of the show but didn't make much of it, as it wasn't really my cup of tea. Long story short, I recently stumbled over an old article in a regional online news paper by accident, reporting about the show's second unit camera crew capturing outdoor scenes in the area. A quick google search provided me with an episode guide, and voilà two episodes of the fifth season had Black Forest content. So, I watched said episodes (fast forward), only paying attention to the scene shots on location. Any reason to go for a ride is good enough for me: I took Bella, the red Vespa, and rode across the hills into our neighbouring town, to find out how true the show had been on the details.

Der eine oder die andere wird schon einmal von Grimm gehört haben, einer amerikanischen Fernsehserie, die in Portland, Oregon gedreht wurde. Der Protagonist der Serie ist ein Nachkomme der Grimms (die mit den Märchen) und seine Aufgabe besteht darin, das Gleichgewicht zwischen Menschheit und Fabelwesen zu halten. Ich hatte zwar schon davon gehört, allerdings hatte mich Grimm nie interessiert. Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn, kürzlich stolperte ich zufällig über einen alten Artikel auf Baden Online, welche von Dreharbeiten im Kinzigtal berichtete. Eine sog. zweite Einheit wurde wohl hierhin entsandt, um Außenaufnahmen zu machen. Ich googelte den Serienführer und fand sehr schnell heraus, um welche Folgen mit "Schwarzwald-Inhalt" es sich handeln musste. Also schaute ich mir diese im Schnelldurchlauf mal an, im Besonderen achtete ich natürlich auf die Aufnahmen, die im Nachbardorf geschossen wurden. Um zu sehen, inwieweit sich die Macher an die Realität gehalten haben, bin ich mal eben auf Bella 'rüber gefahren, um den Wahrheitsgehalt zu prüfen.

1. The village of Wolfach as mentioned in the show is real, it's about 120km (75 ms) southwest of Stuttgart, where the characters arrived by plane.

1. Es gibt die in der Folge erwähnte Stadt Wolfach wirklich. Sie liegt etwa 120km südwestlich von Stuttgart, wo die Charaktere mit dem Flieger gelandet waren.

And they drive a Volkswagen, how very inconspicuous of them. They just blend in well.

Und sie fahren einen VW, das ist natürlich sehr unauffällig, so, als wenn sie dazu gehörten.

Wolfach main street sure looks pretty! They used a lot of drive by footage while the main characters were in the car.

Und der Stadtkern sieht nett aus. Während die Hauptdarsteller im Auto unterwegs waren, lief im Hintergrund Filmmaterial ab, dass im Vorbeifahren gedreht wurde.

... is in fact St. Laurentius church in Wolfach.

The interior shot is completely out of whack though. The gothic look just screams fake.

Bei den Innenaufnahmen stimmt allerdings gar nichts mehr. Das sieht einfach nur unecht aus.

So sieht es hier wirklich aus. Hell und einladend.

3. Wolfach is an ancient village, indeed, founded sometime in the 11th century. Its name derived from the torrential (raging like a wolf) river flowing through the valley. No werewolf has ever been spotted in the area but wolfs (and with the animal comes a certain reputation) might have been common sights back in the day.

3. Wolfach ist tatsächlich uralt, irgendwann im 11. Jahrhundert gegründet. Der Name der Stadt leitet sich wohl aus dem reißenden (wie ein Wolf) Fluss ab, der durch das Tal fließt. Werwölfe hat es hier wohl nicht gegeben, aber früher gab es bestimmt richtige Wölfe, die die Gegend unsicher gemacht haben.

4. The church is much younger though, built in the 15th century. This fact also made it into the episode.

4. Die Kirche ist allerdings viel jünger, da sie erst im 15. Jahrhundert gebaut wurde. Diese Information wurde auch in der Sendung erwähnt.

5. The writers even kept the village's location and geographical features (located on the confluence of rivers Wolf and Kinzig) real.

5. Die Drehbuchschreiber haben sich auch an die Örtlichkeiten und geografischen Details gehalten (die Stadt ist am Zusammenfluss von Kinzig und Wolf gelegen).


While the story progresses the protagonists were looking for a treasure or something buried on one of the hills nearby, so I had a closer look around... and spotted the walls of a castle ruin. Forgotten was my Grimm fact checking mission. I needed to find the way up to the ruin, so I asked a local. "You can't get there by scooter." was the reply. Well, I wasn't going to, I intended to use my feet. Anyway, I found the trail head, and followed the weathered sign to the castle of Wolva, founded in the 11th century, and likely one of the oldest castles in the Black Forest.

Jedenfalls gingen die Helden dann auf die Suche nach einem Schatz auf einem der umgebenden Hügel. Also schaute ich mich ebenfalls um und entdeckte dabei die Mauern einer alten Schlossruine. Sofort hatte ich meine Mission, den Grimm-Drehorten nachzugehen, vergessen. Ich wollte da hinauf! Das war aber gar nicht so einfach, also fragte ich eine Einheimische. "Damit kommen Sie da aber nicht 'rauf." sagte sie auf meinen Roller deutend. Das wollte ich ja auch gar nicht, ich wollte da doch zu Fuß hin. Schließlich fand ich ein verwittertes Schild, dass den Weg zum Schloss Wolva wies, welches wohl im 11. Jahrhundert erbaut wurde und damit wahrscheinlich eines der ältesten Burgen des Schwarzwalds ist.

I don't know how the builder managed to carry all the building material up here back in the days, because there was nothing but a small trail leading up the steep hill.

Mit ist nicht so ganz klar, wie die Erbauer das nötige Baumaterial früher hier hinauf geschafft haben, denn es führte nur ein schmaler Trampelpfad auf den Hügel hinauf.

I didn't find a treasure but found a beautiful vista instead. I basically live on the other side of these hills, and this is where I was headed back to next.

Ich habe zwar keinen Schatz gefunden, aber dafür war die Aussicht von da oben großartig. Ich lebe übrigens dort hinter diesen Hügeln, und dahin ging es dann auch schließlich wieder zurück.
