Heading for Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace and by the way yet again another filming location for Sound of Music (For the fans a themed tour is available.). The region itself has been long known for mining white gold (salt), hence, the name Salz (salt) Burg (castle) in the Salzkammergut (The Imperial Salt Chambers). It's a beautiful area for itself, and many happy days were spent here during summer vacation when I was little.

Nun aber auf nach Salzburg, der Mozart-Stadt und nebenbei auch wieder Filmort für diesen unsäglichen Film über die Trapp-Familie "Sound of Music". Für die vielen Fans gibt es sogar extra Touren dafür. Die Gegend ist aber viel länger berühmt für den Salzbergbau, daher rührt ja auch der Name Salzburg und Salzkammergut. Es ist wunderschön und ich habe hier viele glückliche Ferien in meiner Kindheit verbracht.

Fall impressions

Said childhood memories had us stop by Drachenwand (dragon wall) at Mondsee (moon lake). I couldn't remember the exact location of the holiday farm but I recall it being close to the steep walls of this huge rock formation. As kids we believed that dragons actually lived there...

Diese Kindheitserinnerungen ließen uns dann auch an der Drachenwand am Mondsee Halt machen. Leider konnte ich mich nicht mehr an den Ferienbauernhof erinnern, aber ich weiß noch, dass er ziemlich nahe an den steilen Wänden dieser Felsformation lag. Als Kinder glaubten wir natürlich, dass hier einst tatsächlich Drachen lebten.

It is only recently that I have learned two interesting facts about the lake and its area. 1. Mondsee is actually privately owned (who would even want to own a lake of this size?), and 2. the region has been populated long before the Romans came along, since the stone age (artefacts found in the area date back to 2800 B.C.). The population was likely extinguished by a sudden natural disaster, probably a landslide causing an inland tsunami.

Erst kürzlich habe ich zwei interessante Dinge über den See und seine Gegend erfahren. 1. Der Mondsee ist in Privatbesitz (wobei ich mich frage, wer eine große Wasserfläche sein Eigen nennen will.) und 2. Funde, die bis 2800 v.Ch. zurückdatiert wurden, lassen darauf schließen, dass hier schon in der Steinzeit Besiedelung stattfand, die aber durch eine Katastrophe (man vermutet einen Bergrutsch, der einen Inland Tsunami auslöste), ein jähes Ende fand.

Now we are ready for the cultural intake, and Salzburg has a lot to offer. My better half had found a great deal for an overnighter online, close to the old city core where we parked the car, and went off to explore this urban gem on foot.

Nun aber weiter mit dem Kulturprogramm, von dem Salzburg ja so viel zu bieten hat. Der Göttergatte hatte ein tolles Schnäppchen online gebucht, das nahe an der Altstadt lag, also ließen wir das Auto am Hotel und machten uns zu Fuß auf Erkundungstour.

Downtown Salzburg

Getreidegasse was of course our first destination after crossing the river Salzach. Here lies the Mozart museum, right there in the house where he was born. Judging by the house and its interior the Mozart family seemed to be quite privileged.

Natürlich gingen wir zunächst in die Getreidegasse, nachdem wir die Salzach überquert hatten. Hier findet man das Mozart Museum, genau in dem Haus, in dem Mozart geboren wurde. Dem Gebäude nach zu urteilen muss die Familie Mozart recht wohlhabend gewesen sein.

Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. Wir fotografierten das linke Bild von einer Informationstafel ab. Der Hügel im Hintergrund ist der Mönchsberg, da wollten wir 'rauf.

We prepared ourselves to climb hundreds of steps in order to conquer the hill but for lazy people (like ourselves) the city offered a 30 seconds ride on an elevator instead for a reasonable price (one way).

Wir hatten uns seelisch schon darauf vorbereitet, hunderte von Stufen zu erklimmen, um auf die Spitze des Hügels zu gelangen, aber die Stadt hatte für uns faule Säcke vorgesorgt. Für einen passablen Preis (hin) ging es per Fahrstuhl in 30 Sekunden nach oben.

There is a lovely panorama restaurant and cafe on top, and we needed refreshments (the elevator ride was exhausting...).

Oben gibt es ein schönes Panorama Restaurant und Café, und nach der anstrengenden Fahrt mit dem Aufzug brauchten wir auch dringend eine Erfrischung.

Once on top, we made a beeline to Castle Hohensalzburg, and came by a militia fortress, which was built in the 15th century.

Da wir schon mal oben waren, wollten wir noch hinüber nach Schloss Hohensalzburg und kamen dabei an einer Befestigungsanlage aus dem 15. Jahrhundert vorbei.

Nice views on Hohensalzburg. On the left is a buddhism statue. The castle's or better the fortress' construction began in the early years of the 11th century. It is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

Einige schöne Ausblicke auf Höhensalzburg. Das Linke ist eine Statue mit buddhistischem Thema. Mit dem Bau der Festung wurde bereits im frühen 11. Jahrhundert begonnen und das Schloss ist eines der größten dieser Art in Europa.

Changing perspective: now the view from the castle down to Salzburg Cathedral with Mönchsberg on the opposite side. The cathedral's foundation was put on older remains of the Roman empire back in the 8th century. It was destroyed by fire a few times, and demolished and rebuilt several times over the next ten centuries. Then in the 18th century it was rebuilt in the Baroque style we see today.

Nun haben wir die Perspektive gewechselt und sehen vom Schloss hinüber zum Mönchsberg und hinunter zum Salzburger Dom. Dieser wurde im 8. Jahrhundert mal auf römischem Fundament erbaut. In den nächsten zehn Jahrhunderten wurde das Gebäude mehrfach von Feuer zerstört, abgerissen und wieder aufgebaut bis dann im 18. Jahrhundert im Barockstil errichtet wurde, den wir heute sehen.

The cathedral is an architectural masterpiece, however one comes to wonder how many poor could have been fed and clothed for the cost of such a pompous house of god.

Der Dom ist natürlich ein architektonisches Meisterwerk, aber man kommt nicht umhin, sich zu fragen, wieviele Arme für die Baukosten hätten ernährt und gekleidet werden könnten, statt dieses pompöse Gotteshaus zu bauen.

The last destination on our list was castle Mirabell and its beautiful garden. The fall colours were in full force.

Unsere letzte Station war dann Schloss Mirabell mit seinem schönen Garten. Hier waren die Herbstfarben in voller Pracht.

We strolled back to our hotel, just stopping to pick up some chocolate (Mozart globes) for us and our loved ones. We also spotted some Vespas, Austrians seem to be very fond of them. Heading back home now... until the next long weekend.

Auf dem Weg zurück zum Hotel besorgten wir uns noch ein paar Mozart-Kugeln für uns und auch für unsere Lieben daheim. Dabei entdeckten wir auch ein paar Vespas. Die Österreicher scheinen echte Fans dieser Roller zu sein. Nun geht's erst mal zurück nach Hause... bis zum nächsten langen Wochenende.
