I went to the friendly neighborhood motorcycle equipment store last week, and ordered a XENA XX6 disk lock in yellow. It seemed to be a popular color, since they had every other color on the shelf but yellow. Tuesday Patrick from the shop actually dropped by in my office and delivered the lock himself. That's what I call service!
The assembly was fairly easy, and the color is almost a match. I am really growing fond of yellow.
I am getting into the shopping mood, and wonder what might be next. Suggestions?
Afterthoughts: Ok, some of your comments made me nervous, hence I added this feature to the bike. The ultimate: don't forget your lock warning device. Cost: Two bucks from the hardware store.
I will tie the cord to the lock and my left handgrip, to avoid moving the bike with the lock attached. Thanks Charlie6 for the good advice.
I suggest....

Custard
Bananas
Daffodils
Sunflower seeds
A yellow submarine
A yellow Labrador puppy
Pikachu

ReplyDeleteyou probably know but just in case.
Strongly suggest you get a flexible cord, strap or such that attaches both at the lock and reaches your left hand grip! This way, you don't accidentally forget to remove the lock before riding off! Not good to have the thing still on when the wheel starts rolling. Just saying....not personal experience but it happens.
Otherwise, good deal! I have one myself for when traveling. For around town, not so much.
How about a gently used set of Wolfman tank panniers, with holes pre-cut into the mounting straps so they fit on an F650GS perfectly?

Yeah, Charlie is more than correct. I do have my own experience with it ... sadly. Long ago and from then on I stopped using disc locks.
ReplyDelete@Gary: Very inspiring. I am wondering though what your ties to the Pokemon might be...
ReplyDelete@Charlie: Followed your advice and got a strap from the hardware store, thanks!
@Stacy: I like the Wolfman products, but wow they are expensive up here.
@Guido: The alarm in the lock is probably sensible enough to be activated before causing extreme damage, or so I hope.
WRT to Wolfman tank bag: I had one and didn't like it. It's just complicated to get in. Might be useful if you mostly ride in the rain as you don't need a rain cover for most of their stuff, but I found it very cumbersome to use.
ReplyDeleteNow I have a Cortech Super Mini, which is a little bit better, but still with stupid straps and so on. I think I just don't like tank bags that have straps hanging around everywhere. That was pretty nice with my VFR750F: metal tank, magnetic bag, wind protection good enough to not need any straps.
Good deal Sonja, you won't regret it, just remember to use it. Way too many tales of guys ruining their brake assemblies and topping the bike over.
ReplyDeletedid the GS come with a good metric tool kit? If should have, here's some thoughts (it's what I carry)on some other stuff perhaps to carry.
what's in your toolkit?
@Guido: One of the downsides of this Beemer... plastic tank...argh!
ReplyDelete@Charlie6: To my shame I must admit, I didn't check if it came at all with a tool kit... riding a Beemer with the intention never to have to use the tools ;-) Hey, thanks for the link. Very helpful.
