 #24: Abbey Road

Altenberg Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery was founded in 1133, and can be found in a lovely valley (Odenthal) not far away from Cologne.
A monastery is where monks live in seclusion. They had a brewery, a cook house, a garden, and lovely scenery around. What a tough life they must have led...
The church burned down a few centuries ago, and the monastery was abandoned but later restored, and is today being used by both Christian religions, Protestants and Catholics.
The area is well maintained, and usually attracts lots of visitors, at least in the warmer seasons. I was pretty lucky to have all this architectural glory to myself.
Usually churches are full of pagean-like pomposity, but this one looks quite modest, just as the house of God should be.

  3. You always have the neatest pictures from over there. Very cool. I'm not much for religion, any religion, but I do enjoy pictures of churches because of the architecture.

  4. What a wonderful old church. Beautiful inside and out. I like the simplicity and brightness of the interior shot. What a treat to get the place to yourself. I would think that's the best way to enjoy the place in solitude...with camera in hand. ;)

  5. I love old architecture, it is pretty amazing. Those vaulted ceilings are incredible and considering most old churches were stone it's awe inspiring to think how they get them together. Beautiful pictures Sonja!

  6. Beautiful architecture - there is something peaceful about old buildings. You're right though, their life was tough - I suppose that's why they incorporated their own brewery on site, a little nog to take the edge off.

  7. That final picture was well composed Sonja! I agree with you that churches should not be festooned with artifacts and distractions.
